| Thanks for dropping by! My name is Christine Newland and I am very happily married to a very special man who I met on the internet 3 years ago. Walter Beitlberger has enriched my life in so many ways! We are blessed with a wonderful life and many good friends. We have a beautiful cottage-style house near the Thames river, in London, Ontario. The house is nestled in a large tree-filled yard! In the Spring the tree blossoms are truly breathtaking! We have a critter family consisting of 3 dogs, 3 cats, a beautiful Arabian mare and a couple of large ponds filled with stunning goldfish! Our home has a "magical" quality about it! The living room is all windows and brings the wooded front yard inside! It has a Native American feel about it. We also have a log cabin bedroom which feels as though you are stepping back in time. Our guest room is distinctively "African" with primitive furniture and a bed made from tree trunks and branches. At night we like to sit by the fire outside with our guitars and sing. Fireflies light up the trees like mini Xmas lights and crickets chirp out a noisy chorus. In the summer we enjoy the sunshine by eating outside on our deck and relaxing in the hammock. Life is great! Not a day goes by that we do not express our appreciation for the life we have and the people we love!
Professionally speaking, I am principal cello with Orchestra London Canada. I spent two years in Germany, in Antonio Janigro's Master Class and toured Europe in the Dusseldorf String Quartet. I played a six week solo tour in Japan sponsored by the Hellas Cultural Organization. In 2000 when our orchestra was facing possible collapse, I organized, promoted and performed a special fund-raising tribute concert. A wonderful and generous man and fellow Jacqueline Du Pre enthusiast ( who I named "Stradman"), was kind enough to loan me his six million dollar "Bonjour" Stradivarius cello to perform an all solo cello tribute to my friend, the late Jacqueline Du Pre. The 1,700 seat hall was sold out and raised close to $100,000. Sharing Jackie's letters with the audience felt as intimate as sitting at home in my own living room with a few good friends.( Quotes from the letters can be found in Carol Easton's book "Jacqueline Du Pre"). I ended the concert with the Elgar Concerto for which Jackie was so well known. There was laughter and there were tears. It was a highly emotional concert. My dear mother, who was also my first cello teacher, died only days before the concert. I know Mom and Jackie were there with me! It was truly amazing and heart-warming to look up and see and feel the love and support all of my friends,old and new, my whole family and my dear friends Mr. and Mrs. Stradman and Ric Heinl who made this concert a reality!
I organized a fund-raising concert for 911 which raised $18,000 for The Red Cross ( the musicians donated their services) as well as a Fashion Show Fund-Raiser where the musicians of Orchestra London performed and strutted their stuff on the "catwalk". What fun!!!
I was privileged to have a tearful embrace with the great Pablo Casals and meet Pierre Fournier who extended to me an invitation to study with him, and play for Jacqueline Du Pre on her famous "Davidov" Stradivari cello. I also had classes with the late great Russian cellist Mstislav Rostropovich and Hungarian cellist Janos Starker and studied chamber music with Aldo Parisot at Yale University and with the Guarneri, Hungarian, Yale, and Lenox String Quartets. I have performed numerous concerti with our orchestra and on June 6th, I will debut a new work written for me by London composer Oliver Whitehead, called "Uhuru Peak" an African work that addresses global warming. The concert will be at the Grand Theatre in London at 8:00pm. I hope you can come!
Besides classical music, I love meditative, rock, country, blues, jazz and pop. I was in a rock band called "Picasso Sun" playing cello and singing back-up. I love improvising and jamming with all of my musician friends. Music is a huge part of our lives! My husband and I are always listening to something!
I play on a beautiful old Itlaian cello made by Giovanni Francesco Celoniato in Turin, Italy, in 1730.

This is my Arabian mare Kyla. She is beautiful and very sweet! She is the love of my life and has brought so much joy into my life. I came close to losing her a couple of times in the past and I am just very grateful she is still here to love!
