I didn't understand what this person was talking about because I am a painter. This person later explained that I was the white trash artist. Now this stuck with me because a word like 'white trash' can carry tons of negativity. This statement brought to my attention the way others see themselves and the world. If my paintings are honest narratives, meaning they are based in reality, then maybe me and the people I paint are white trash. For me, my paintings celebrate Appalachian culture. This culture represents a freedom that can't be found in a society that values its citizens based upon educational or financial accomplishments. That's why the Appalachian people have been stuck with so many negative stereotypes." I edited my profile with Thomas' Myspace Editor V4.4 |

Music:I've been playing in a Variety of different Kentucky and East Kentucky Bands since around 1990. For the most part, unless otherwise stated, I played guitar for most of these groups. My First Band was a punk band I started with my two best fiends called EAGLE SEVEN,named after the bug killer, because black flag was also a bug killer and that's what we wanted to be associated with. I was then in a couple of Rock bands with no names who played original music and some covers at high school gatherings, talent shows, parking lot shows, etc. I think one of those bands was called Salt Water Taffy, we played nerd Rock. Then I played bass in the infamous dirge metal band BLEEDER, who played a significant show at Stumbo Park, with DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, and JABORWOCKY. Soon after a skatin buddy of mine, and me, had a group called WALLOP. It was a lets see how hard you can rock with a kareoke machine, and beat up acoustic guitar kind of band. After that, me and Salena Filichia, started playing together with friends and we called it the CEPHUS'S HOUSE BAND, because we played at Cephus's House, and also had bands play ther too. At the same time as the CEPHUS"S HOUSE BAND, I had another Punk Band Called BLANK. It was my first band to record a real CD that we sold at shows. I then Joined an Existing group called SWEATY TOOTHED MADMAN, wich later became POINTDEXTER in which I played bass, a Queersish, Screaching Weaselish, Alkaline Trioish, punk band. Dare I say pop. This was my first fairly well known band, where people actually showed up to shows and knew our lyrics. We actually made enough to put out a seven inch on my CLABBERED MILK RECORD LABEL. We stopped playing because Our drummer moved to winsconsin. Then he moved back. Then me and Salena got together again and started MARCUS BROWN, which later became MARK US BROWN, because people thought MARCUS BROWN was some kind of singer songwriter guy. Marcus Brown was actually our bass player's name. I played drums in this band, we recorded alot. Most of the tunes were ones Salena had written. we put out a bunch of cds, played tons of shows, went on tour. When I moved to Louisville, Salena eventually followed me and we started GREEN FORMICA TABLE. This band was probably the best band I was in up to that point because I was playing guitar which was more comfortable to me, and we all callaborated on all our songs. You can hear GREEN FORMICA TABLE at www.myspace.com/greenformicatable GFT would probably be more successful today, because we know more about the ins and outs of Big City Show promoting than we did when we first came to the city. After that I learned to play old time banjo. At first it was to use in GFT, but when GFT broke up, I started learning appalachian Banjo traditions, which I tried to ignore growing up. But anyhow, I now have a band that promises to be my most successful band ever. PONTY'S CAMPER is a band formed by rock musicians to play traditional old time music with a rock'n'roll attitude, because we feel that modern music, specifically rock, is deeply rooted in this time of musicality, and really hasn't changed all that much, I'm sure if old timers had electric guitars, they would have plugged them in. You can visit PONTY'S CAMPER at www.myspace.com/pontyscamperOld TIme Eastern Kentucky Hillbilly Music RocknRoll Roscoe Holcomb, HogScraper, Lee Sexton, Doc Boggs, George Gibson, Hobart Smith, misfits, Sonic Youth, Fugazi, Old AC/DC, Nirvana, Green Formica Table, Ultra Pulverize, Monkey Boy, Pointdexter, Mark Us Brown, George Pegrim, Doc Watson, Clack Mountain String Band, Bill Monroe, Stanly Brothers, and lots more. |
