About Me

Jazz Vocalist David Devoe is regularly performing in New York City at a wide range of venues including Sweet Rhythm, Cornelia Street Café and La Lanterna. In October 2004, Devoe was one of three participants in the first-ever New Singers Evening featuring Thelonious Monk Jazz Vocal Competition Winner Gretchen Parlato and multi-award winning vocalist/composer Julie Hardy at the 55 Bar (New York, NY). Mr. Devoe has performed with jazz icon Steve Lacy, including world-premiers of Lacy compositions Method and Petronious. Devoe was the featured tenor soloist with the New York Trumpet Ensemble, under the direction of Mark Gould, which premiered an untitled performance piece in Borden Auditorium at the Manhattan School of Music. Other venues include: Savoy (NYC), Regattabar (Cambridge, MA), Foccacia Jazz Club (Graz, Austria), and Bezanson Hall (Amherst, MA).

In 2003, he was featured with Matt Wilson Quartet including Andrew DAngelo, Jeff Lederer and Yosuke Inoue at a concert for their CD release Humidity (2003, Palmetto). He has performed and recorded with some of New York Citys finest jazz musicians including Chris Cheek, Ben Monder, Ben Street, Steve Cardenas, Dan Rieser, Adam Cruz, Ted Poor, Matt Clohesy, Jon Wikan and Ferenc Nemeth. In 2001, Mr. Devoe performed with Mulgrew Miller in Jordan Hall. David Devoe received an Outstanding Performance award from Downbeat Magazine for the jazz vocal college student musician category in 2000.

As a participant in the Jazz in July workshop at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Mr. Devoe studied with jazz luminary Sheila Jordan. At her suggestion, Devoe enrolled as a Guest Student in the jazz program at the Hoschule fur Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Graz, Austria. This opportunity allowed him to study with multi-Grammy Award nominee, Mark Murphy. In a 1997 radio interview conducted in London (when Devoe was 17 years old), Mr. Murphy was asked, Do you think the future of jazz vocals is in good hands? His response was, In some places it iswith David Devoe.

David Devoe has completed a Master of Music degree with Distinction (honors) in Performance (MM 04) and a Bachelor of Music (BM 02) degree in Jazz Studies at the New England Conservatory of Music where he was a student of Dominique Eade. At the Conservatory, Devoe also studied privately with Fred Hersch and Gene Bertoncini. David Devoe has performed in masterclasses with Kenny Wheeler, Jay Clayton, Dave Liebman, Art Lande and Bob Brookmeyer. Additional private instructors include Theo Bleckmann, Jeannie Lovetri, Marguerite Juenemann, Chris Humphrey and Tom Lellis.
