| Mindy Sotiri writes tunes. And plays them. Quite often in front of other people. She spent her formative years listening to Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, and Lou Reed and fell quickly and easily in love with the sounds and words of grumpy Jewish men who had smoked too many cigarettes. Since then she has fallen in love with any number of less grumpy non-smokers, but she continues to be inspired by the way it is possible to tangle words around guitar strings and make something very beautiful. Mindy plays regularly around Sydney, and has recorded two albums over the last few years. Accidental Invitation (February 2003) and Drink It (September 2004) both distributed through MGM. For the decade prior to recording her first album she wrote a lot of songs and played them on her own and in her bedroom. Usually with the door closed. Over the last few years she has ventured a little further afield. She plays every few weeks at a range of venues around Sydney- sometimes to packed buzzy rooms, and other times to a scattering of emotional heckling drunks and exhausted bar staff. She likes it both ways. Mindys music might best be described as hard-ish folk. Which is to say, that although she mostly plays with her fingers and messes around with tunings, she does not do a good line in lilting third person narratives.
