| Like the venerable phoenix of Greek mythology, I rose out of the boring, redneck-laden land of middle Michigan. My descent into the mountains of East Tennessee landed me in the midst of the Hillbilly Highlands of southern Appalachia. At last, I had found a home in the midst of stills and bluegrass pickin' parties. Along with my pioneer-woman wife, we struggled for a year to clear our plot of land and start the beginning of a subsistence-level farm, growing beets for pickling and babies to use as cheap farm labor. Now one year later, we have finally built our dream shack (one room with an two-holer outside). We look forward to basking in the glorious south until the north attempts to take sweet Dixie away again. | |
