"Matt Jones is a singer-songwriter with a lot going for him: his stage presence, his interesting, original songs, and especially his phrasing. He is a great storyteller." -Jimmy Norman, co-writer of "Time is on my side" "Matt Jones has a rich voice, which is truly the highlight of his act. Almost crooner-like at times, he makes upbeat songs funky and catchy, while his slower songs are brooding and soulful." -Jeff Goncalves, Jezebelmusic.com REVIEW OF "BUTTER AND RUM": "Will You Run", is a captivating song, while "Lie Here Beside Me" shows Matt's talent as a storyteller. In "Not Even Dreaming" and "Dancing in the Moonlight", it is the distinctive phrasing that stands out. In fact, this is the main feature that sets him apart from other singer/songwriters. Of course, one EP consisting of four rather short songs cannot provide a very clear picture of someone's abilities. One of the advantages of reviewing such a short CD is that while writing, I had the opportunity to hear it four times in a row and I like it more every time I hear it. It's one of those records that "grows" on you. The more you hear it, the more you love it" -Ron, www.rootstime.be, March, 2008 Matt Jones: Matt Jones is a Brazilian born, Texas bred singer-songwriter whose well-crafted and soulful songs and unique baritone voice have earned him praise and attention around the New York City bar and club circuit that he currently inhabits. He mainly performs in NYC at acclaimed venues such as Pianos, The Bitter End, The Baggot Inn, Caffe Vivaldi, The Sidewalk Cafe, Banjo Jims, The American Folk Art Museum, and Rockwood Music Hall, and is looking forward to expanding his touring to possibly include the U.K. and other parts of Europe. In the first few years of his life, Matt lived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Quito, Ecuador, and Bogota, Colombia, before settling down in Houston, Texas, where he lived for fourteen years. He started playing the violin and piano at the age of seven, and started playing the guitar at the age of sixteen. He left Texas to go to college in Massachusetts, where he played guitar and drums for a few bands, and also studied jazz theory and jazz violin. In 2004, he lived in Rio de Janeiro, and studied the regional drumming style maracatu, a close relative of the samba beat. |
