Her works include the groundbreaking treatise The Second Sex, and philosophical works such as The Ethics of Ambiguity. She is also known for her relationship with fellow existential philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre. The two met at the Sorbonne in 1929, when she came second (Sartre comes first) in the agregee de philosophie in France, the two remained constant companions until Sartre’s death in 1981. Some of her works include: She Came to Stay (1943) The Blood of Others (1945) All Men are Mortal (1946) The Ethics of Ambiguity (1947) The Second Sex (1949) *A film was made of The Second Sex in 1984 America Day By Day (1954) The Mandarins (1954) Memoirs of a Dutiful Daughter (1958) A Very Easy Death (1964) The Woman Destroyed (1967) When Things of the Spirit Come First (1979) Adieux: A Farewell to Sartre (1981) Beauvoir also edited a political journal, Les Temps Modernes, with Sartre. She often used the journal as a medium to promote her work, and explore ideas that later became books and essays. She remained an editor until her death. |
