| Mobius Collective found its origins back in 01' at Viejo San Juan's Enlaces Café. Initially starting as an interlacing of Latin Puerto Rican styles such as Bomba and Salsa with Afro-American genres such as Hip-Hop, Jazz & Funk as well as Drum and Bass. Early members included DJ Nature who brought his knowledge of turntablism and a unique approach to mixing such musical styles into essentially a new musical hybrid that eventually became the platform from which Mobius would embark. The Collective's Director y Saxophonista (Troy Simms) found a unit with Pianist (Bayrex Jimenz) & Drummer (Efrain Martinez) that has solidified into the core that moves and shapes mobius Today. Each personality brings a key element to the group that makes it truly a unique "Mobius trip".Mobius performs regularly throughout San Juan and New York in such venues as Nuyorican Café, Bamboo Bei, Café Seda, Joes Pub NYC, Rose Live Music (Mobius weekly: Brooklyn Freestyle Sessions)A full Mobius presentation is interchanging between: Alto Sax, Trumpet, Two Keyboardist, Bass & Drums. In addition a D.J. and two-percussionist join the cipher instigating dialogue between Mc's and Bomba Dancer's responding to our Afro-Latin ancestors.What does Mobius mean?The word Mobius comes from Möbius strip or Möbius band which is a surface with only one side and one edge making it a continuous surface with no beginning or end.This is the underlying concept that best explains the musical mission of mobius as well. Through the mixing of musical genres and cultures into a continuous narrative by way of improvisation the Möbius strip or "trip" is our exploration of now.Mobius became a collective once the Brooklyn New York Chapter was added in May 07'. This crew consist of New York City based artist who have played & recorded with the likes of The Fugees, Lauren Hill, 50 cent, Redman, Mos Def, Matisyahu and the list goes on… The Brooklyn Freestyle Sessions is a weekly party that Mobius Collective NYC holds every Thursday that has become the stage for many emerging artist. | |
