I was born to hard-working, first-generation middle-class parents in semi-rural Ohio. Raised by working class parents of coal-miners, sons of immigrants and children of the depression, they were baby boomers to be the first in their family with college educations and to enjoy middle-class luxuries. Like many others of their background, they developed into adulthood seeing a world of opportunity in America. Like many other children of their generation, I share in the paradox of their optimism and the recognition of the reality of a country in rapid cultural, economic and ethical decline.
I became a musician at the age of 12. I was first a percussionist and was formally trained in orchestral percussion and rock and jazz trap kit drumming. I am also a self-taught guitarist. I played in several bands, ranging from punk to industrial, not many lasting long enough to have a substantial output. My punk bands, The Roswells and The Cling-Ons, had a few releases. My hardcore band, Hell Is For Heroes, played some memorable shows in Phoenix in '00-'01, and I played with some incredible people and musicians in that band. I currently play lead guitar for a post-punk band, called Glamour Shot .
I grew up with many musical interests, from industrial to punk, metal to hip-hop, and new wave to hardcore. The only music communities (or "scenes"), however, that I ever got actively involved in was the punk and hardcore scenes. I produced a fanzine from 1995-1999 called "Interbang." I had considerable success, in terms of consistency of publication, advertiser support, national distribution and critical review. I sold all the ads, did almost all the writing, almost all the photography and all of the layout, and dealt with web-offset printing companies, starting at the age of 17.
My disillusionment with traditional music led me to frequent experimentation with electronic sound. My first recorded examples of this experimentation were released as the "Memorial: 006306" EP by Clew Of Theseus . At the time of its recording and release, I wasn't even aware that there was an entire community of harsh noise artists that the sounds I recorded easily fit into. My only possible influences would have been Einsturzende Neubauten and the experimental sounds of "Our Earth's Blood" by Man Is The Bastard. Other than their recordings, I had no reference for noise. With the release of my first 7", I found an entire world of wonderful music, and for the past 10 years, I have been recording and releasing haunting harsh electronics under the name Clew Of Theseus . A ten-year anniversary retrospective series (of sorts) is coming to fruition this year.
In 2002, I began recording Power Electronics, as EMESIS . EMESIS' intention is to hone in on the feelings of misanthropy and focused hatred of individual and group actions worth of contempt and the desire for retaliation and revenge. The name itself is inspired by being constantly sickened to the point of nausea by my species, and dwells in the drive to erradicate the evils that men do by erradicating mankind. The project is very apolitical and amoral, and instead focuses on the emotions of contempt and disgust and the drive for revenge.
Being a music fanatic, it's only appropriate that I'm also a DJ. My first experience as a disc jockey was working for WOBC in 1996-1997. My radio show "As Mainstream As They Wanna Be" was broadcast under the assumed title "DJ Lee Harvey Oswald." For the last 3 years, I have also been a club DJ and promotor. Some events I've produced are CLUB HELL (fetish-EBM), Retrospect ('80s new wave), The Hive (eclectic music mix), Dive (indie rock and electro), and Purgatory (gothic and EBM). I have guested at Filthy/Gorgeous, Pretty Vacant (with Daniel Ash), Shake! and many others locally, as well as The Chamber in Cleveland and Vector in Las Vegas.
I have worked in executive-level jobs and earned a six-figure income before. I gave that up because I couldn't make that kind of money and have much of a life left. One day I hope to find a way to be financially independent and live a life I enjoy. Until then, I'll take the latter any day.
My girlfriend, Charmon, has brought more happiness to my life that I could have ever imagined. She's perfect for me. She treats me with complete respect, and I worship the ground she walks on.
I have a Belgian Malinois dog, and a cat named Guppy. I now, also, have two new cats, since Charmon moved in. Guppy hates other cats, but I really like my new kitties, Celie and Mister.
