Responding to reports of gunfire about 9:40 p.m. in the 1700 block of Sixth Avenue, police found residents giving CPR to Michael Randolph Jr. Randolph's father said Wednesday his son was on his way home to their house on Bancroft Avenue in East Oakland after visiting an uncle when he was shot. "My son's last words to me were that he was bringing home a nice bike for me," Michael Randolph Sr. said, adding that he had been angry at his son for losing a bicycle he had loaned him. Randolph Sr. said an eyewitness to the shooting came to his house Wednesday to share what he saw: Some men in a Buick pulled in front of his son and opened fire at him. Randolph Jr. died about 10:30 p.m. at Highland Hospital. Police found the bicycle near where he was confronted and shot. Police said Randolph was able to run a short distance before collapsing. "My son was a good boy," his father said. "Just like all teenagers he got into mischief, but nothing major." He said his son liked to record rap music at local studios and played a lot of basketball. The teenager, whose name was not released by Oakland police, was wanted for multiple shootings in the area, police said. The shooting took place in the 1400 block of 65th at International Boulevard about midnight, just a few hours after the end of National Night Out, an annual evening of block parties held to bring neighbors together to fight local crime. Police were approaching two teenagers wanted in connection with shootings in the area when one teenager turned and fired multiple shots from a handgun at the officers, said police spokesman Officer Roland Holmgren. The officer returned fire, hitting the suspect. He was taken to Highland Hospital Oakland, where he died, Holmgren said. The name of the officer who fired the fatal shot was not released by police.
