| A feast of an album from Jérôme Didelot aka Orwell. Pop par excellence, "Le génie humain" is packed orchestral maneuvers, soaring synths, and silky, buzzy goodness that bring Eggstone, Louis Philippe and the space bossa moments of Testbild! to mind. With influences running from the early 60s through the early 80s, Jerome's songs have a folk-like delicacy, but sail on intricate arrangements featuring strings, voices, woodwinds and keyboards galore. "Le génie humain" features collaborations with Médéric Gontier (Tahiti 80), Alexander von Mehren, JP Nataf, Ruth Minnikin (Heavy Blinkers), Miss Aprilia Sari (White Shoes and the Couples Company) and Julien Lonchamp (Jack and the'), among others. Recommended for fans of all of the above, plus Julien Ribot and High Llamas.Alexander Bailey (Radio Khartoum)___________________________________________________ ___________2000 : sortie du premier mini album d’Orwell. La pop éthérée du groupe séduit quelques journalistes (dont ceux de Libération et Les Inrockuptibles, qui incluent le titre Un être sans faille sur leur compilation Un été 2000) Suivent quelques concerts, dont une apparition au festival des Inaperçus à Paris.2001/2002 : le premier véritable album sort dans plusieurs pays. Au Japon tout d’abord (Quince Records), puis en France (distribution Wagram), Thaïlande (Smallroom Records) et aux Etats-Unis (Parasol Records). L’album Des lendemains, sur lequel Médéric Gontier de Tahiti 80 s’illustre à la guitare, vaut à Orwell une reconnaissance internationale. Le groupe a la chance de partager quelques scènes avec des artistes complices : Sean O’Hagan des High Llamas, JP Nataf ou les Anglais de Morning Star.2003 : première tournée du groupe en Amérique du Nord (Etats-Unis et Canada) Orwell sera à l’affiche du festival CMJ de New-York. Le label canadien Endearing records sort un split-single Orwell / Heavy Blinkers (brillants mélodistes de Halifax).2004 : enregistrement d’un nouvel album.2005 : sortie de L’archipel (Twin Fizz / Discograph). Cette fois-ci le groupe a invité James Warren (Stackridge, Korgis), auteur du tube légendaire Everybody’s got to learn sometime, à poser sa voix sur deux titres. Au Japon, c’est le label JVC qui sort le disque. Le label allemand Apricot Records édite également une version de l’album.2006 : première tournée allemande du groupe. Orwell est par ailleurs invité à Bangkok au festival Melody of life en octobre 2006. Le groupe remporte un certain succès en Thaïlande.Déjà un nouvel album est en préparation. Pour cette nouvelle collection de chansons, la maison Orwell a décidé d’ouvrir ses portes à tous les artistes de talent qui ont croisé le chemin du groupe ces dernières années. Nous trouverons la voix de Ruth Minnikin des Heavy Blinkers sur un titre, la guitare de Médéric Gontier de Tahiti 80 sur un autre… D’autres musiciens sont virtuellement invités : JP Nataf, le Norvégien Alexander Von Mehren, les Indonésiens de White Shoes, et même le dessinateur Berberian, qui réalise également la pochette. Sur Le génie humain, Orwell mettra à contribution différents artistes aux quatre coins de la planète, pour un album sans frontières. | |
