| Joesph Caluya is a family man, a political defender of dairy products, and one person who has definitely seen things go from bad to worse. Known to the world as Elum the Gelfling, he may not have even begun rapping if he didn’t steal his brother’s cassette tapes when he stood a mere 4 foot 5. Sneaking into bboy battles by tagging behind the older kids, he would emulate the style that had captivated him through his 1994 chrome encrusted boom box. A staple for years in the San Diego hip hop scene, The Gelfling would get the backing he deserved after meeting Change at a battle in a downtown park. Taking a stance against the material deemed suitable for mass distribution, Elum the Gelfling provides the essence of what it felt like waking up to watching beatstreet on the television. Standing for all that is right in hip hop, his voice seems to vibe with yesteryear, which has created a cult following amongst his listeners.
