| Just another night at Hotel Winston, Amsterdam: DELUXE is support act for the famous dutch act Johan. More accurate, Johan is playing in the fall out of DELUXE. It became one of those nights where the support act ran away with all the attention. There was not much left to conquer for Johan. A review: Rogier Klooster, leadsinger, tambourine loosely in his hand, Gallagherpose, head slightly backwards, eyes closed, the mic close to his mouth. His voice reminds me of Robert Pollard (Guided By Voices). Sometimes he opens his eyes and looks semi interested into the crowd. Across the crowd actually. Straight through it, is perhaps the most accurate description. The beige coat stays on, even though it must be hotter than Dantes Inferno under those stage lights. Image is everything. Barend Brieffies, guitarist and songwriter (the man with the masterplan, the Noel Gallagher of Deluxe, but without the arrogance) visibly enjoys being on stage. Jumping around and smiling throughout the whole set. Bassplayer Wiebe Boorsma; is a medical doctor in his other life and it seems to me that a bassguitar suits him just as well as a stethoscope. Drummer Vincent Stijns must have fallen into a barrel of whiskey when he was a little boy; his grin just can”t be wiped off his face. And then there's the new kid; Bengi. Second guitar player and skateboarder. A Dutch James Iha. The music is melodic; a warm and uplifting sound. The verses are subtle most of the time. The chorusses are loud and passionate, like reaching the top of a mountain or the sun breaking through the clouds. The songs are quite compact; they sound tight and streamlined; every now and then with an anarchistic touch. This is no agonizing and dark rock; but contagious and playful rock with Beatle-esque backing vocals. A band that sounds very together and tight, but where every member counts. A band that makes ballads sound just as effortless as the more uptempo repertoire. A band, to wrap it up, that combines energy and melody in a brilliant manner.Ties Dirks (Concerto Crew) | |
