Le terme black metal est apparu en 1982, grace a l'album de Venom "Black Metal". Mais la naissance de ce style musical se fera quelques annees plus tard. Des les premices du genre, le black metal a voulu s'ecarter de la mouvance thrash metal jugee trop commerciale et trop pervertie. Legion, ex-chanteur du groupe Marduk, estime que la naissance du black metal est due a une reaction du public face au ralentissement de brutalite dont faisait preuve le death metal. Les scenes black et death metal sont devenues, a une periode, tres antagonistes. Les premiers groupes, comme Venom, Sarcofago, Hellhammer, Bathory, Mayhem, Burzum, Darkthrone souvent orginaires de Scandinavie, sont consideres comme les premiers couteaux du black metal. La maturite du mouvement peut etre percue dans les enregistrements de Bathory vers la fin des annees 1980 et le debut des annees 1990.
