Phone home: Purported UFO video to be shown Friday

VATICAN CITY (AP) — The Vatican’s chief astronomer says that believing in aliens does not contradict faith in God.
The Rev. Jose Gabriel Funes, the Jesuit director of the Vatican Observatory, says that the vastness of the universe means it is possible there could be other forms of life outside Earth, even intelligent ones.
In an interview published Tuesday by Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano, Funes says that such a notion "doesn’t contradict our faith" because aliens would still be God’s creatures.

The interview was headlined "The extraterrestrial is my brother." Funes said that ruling out the existence of aliens would be like "putting limits" on God’s creative freedom."

WILLIAM J. BIRNES

Bill Birnes, the publisher of UFO Magazine, is the star of the new series, UFO Hunters. Each week, he and his team of researchers travel to the sites of world-famous UFO events where they use high-tech equipment and cutting-edge investigative techniques to explore the encounter and arrive at answers about what really happened.

Birnes is well-qualified to lead such a team, having written and edited over twenty-five books and encyclopedias in the fields of human behavior, true crime, current affairs, history, psychology, business, computing, and the paranormal. He is the co-author of The Day After Roswell, which was a New York Times bestseller in 1997, and subsequently a documentary on The History Channel. Birnes is a frequent radio and television talk-show guest, having appeared on "Good Morning America," "Dateline, NBC," "Entertainment Tonight," "Coast to Coast AM," "UFOs in Russia," "USOs, Underwater Submersible Objects," and "Black Box UFOs."

His previous cable feature, The Riverman -- based on the book he co-authored with detective Dr. Robert Keppel about how serial killer Ted Bundy helped police track Green River Killer Gary Ridgway -- was broadcast on A&E in September 2004. Birnes' other cable documentary, on A&E and The History Channel, was The Haunting of the President, based on his and Joel Martin's book of the same name. His title Black Dahlia Avenger, recently sold to New Line, is currently in development as is his title Life in the Balance by Billy Sinclair at Karmic Studios.

As a television producer, Birnes' first cable feature was When Husbands Cheat for Lifetime Television with Hearst Entertainment Television. Among his books are: Worker in the Light with George Noory, Space Wars with William Scott and Michael Coumatos, The Grisly Business Unit with Robert Keppel, The Killer Next Door with Joel Norris, Signature Killers with Joel Norris, The McGraw-Hill Personal Computer Programming Encyclopedia, When You are the Headline with Robert Irvine, and Selling at the Top. Birnes is currently completing two criminology textbooks: Signature Killers, with Robert Keppel, Ph.D., and Mass Murderers with John Liebert, M.D.

He holds a law degree and received a Ph.D. from New York University in 1974.

PAT USKERT
Pat was born in Nitra, Czechoslovakia but his family fled the 1968 Russian occupation, moving to the San Francisco, where Pat grew up. He joined the Army after high school and served in the 814th Engineer Co., 130th Engineer Brigade, primarily in Hanau, Germany. Returning to the US when his hitch was up, he finished his education at California State University at San Francisco, receiving a B.A. in English.

Uncertain about what to do next, he worked at an eclectic range of jobs, including cannery worker in Alaska, white water raft guide, English teacher in Japan, and scuba dive master in Philippines.

When he witnessed a strange metallic object floating over Venice, California, Pat became intrigued with the UFO phenomenon and decided to spend the next few years investigating it. His road trip across California exploring UFO sightings and interviewing witnesses became the documentary Visitors: California UFO Wave. It caught the eye of Bill Birnes , publisher of UFO Magazine, who offered him a staff position.

Pat brings exemplary research and investigative skills to the team. In addition, Pat's skill at scuba diving has been vital to a number of cases.

TED ACWORTH
Ted brings a background of hard science to the team. He holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering Design from Stanford University and an MS and BS from Columbia University. He is currently a researcher at MIT, where he also received an MBA as a Sloan Fellow. Previously he was Director for Research at the Cambridge-MIT Institute, a joint venture between MIT and Cambridge University.

Ted has worked for NASA at their Palo Alto labs, designing and operating a calibration system to test the $700M space telescope before it was launched. He worked with St. Luke's Hospital in New York, developing a digital image processing system which allows doctors to automatically analyze the severity of coronary artery blockages.

He has held teaching positions at Stanford University and Columbia University. He has also been a visiting professor at Shenzhen University in China, where he taught computer based instrumentation as well as courses in western culture and English.

In addition to his expertise in theoretical and practical science, which is invaluable in testing and assessing the evidence collected at UFO sites, Ted is also a licensed pilot and scuba diver.

JEFF TOMLINSON
Jeff is the intern of the team, and began his education at the University of Hawaii where he studied a wide range of practical and applied science. He is currently finishing up his studies at California State University, East Bay, where he's working toward a Biological Degree in Technologies and Geological Inquiry. His postgraduate plans include research into the increasingly important interdisciplinary field of astrobotany.

The Betty and Barney Hill story
In the early morning hours, Betty and Barney Hill were returning from a vacation in Montreal, Canada. As they traveled down Highway 3, just outside of Colebrook, New Hampshire, Betty first noticed a star that appeared to be moving. Bringing Barney’s attention to it, they watched it as they continued to drive. They realized that the star was moving and keeping pace with them as they negotiated the mountainous terrain.
Somewhere, outside of Indian Head, NH, they decided to stop the car and use binoculars to attempt to see what the object was. Barney left the road and moved through the woods to get a closer look. By this time, the Hills’ realized that the star was a pancake-shaped object which had moved to a position in front of their car at tree-top level. As Barney got closer to it, he observed two fin-like objects with blinking red lights that appeared to detach from the fins, as the fins began coming out of the sides of the object.

Barney was filled with absolute terror and found that he could not take the binoculars away from his face. He claimed that the leader’s eyes just bored into his head. Tearing the binoculars away from his eyes so hard that he broke the strap around his neck, he ran hysterically back to the car screaming to Betty, “They are going to capture us!!”
Barney jumped into the car and began driving wildly. Shortly after this, the Hills’ heard a series of beeping sounds and this is where their memory of the experience ends. Later, they hear another series of beeping sounds and when they return to consciousness, they discover that they have traveled 35 miles from where their memory fails them. When they return home they also realize that 2 hours are unaccounted for.

Following this, the Hills’ are treated by a Boston psychiatrist, Dr. Benjamin Simon, and, under medical hypnosis, they recall the terrifying 2-hours of missing time.
This story is told in detail in a book by John Fuller, “The Interrupted Journey” and was made into a television movie by the same name.

The Dropa Stones
The story of the Dropa for us begins in the same place, but the year is 1938. The mountains are the Baian-Kara-Ula mountains on the border that divides China and Tibet. An archaeological expedition, led by Chi Pu Tei, has trudged into the barely accessible mountain range, and has happened upon some caves that had obviously been occupied by a primitive people long ago.On the walls were carved pictograms of the heavens: the sun, the moon, the stars, and the Earth with lines of dots connecting them. Then the team made the most incredible discovery of all. Half-buried in the dirt floor of the cave was an odd stone disk, obviously fashioned by the hand of an intelligent creature. The disk was approximately nine inches in diameter and three-quarters of an inch thick. In the exact center was a perfectly round, 3/4" hole, and etched in its face was a fine groove spiraling out from the center to the rim, making the disk look for all the world like some kind of primitive phonograph record.This one plate, dated to be between 10,000 and 12,000 years old , but the wonder was multiplied manifold. In all, 716 such plates were found. And each held an incredible secret. The groove, upon further inspection, was not a groove at all, but a continuous line of strange carved hieroglyphics - writing!

Dr. Tsum Um Nui , in 1962, painstakingly transcribed the characters from the disk to paper. The writing was so small he had to use a magnifying glass to see it clearly. But the stones were old - perhaps 12,000 years old, it was estimated - and much of the hieroglyphics were difficult to make out or had been worn away by time and the elements. As he worked, many questions nagged the professor. How did these primitive people fashion these precise stones? How did they manage the almost microscopic writing? Who were they and what was the purpose of these hundreds of stones? Once the characters were transcribed, Dr. Tsum Um Nui began the arduous task of trying to decode its message. Eventually, he began to make progress. A word emerged. Then another. A phrase became understandable, then an entire sentence. He had broken the code. He discerned that the messages on the stones were written by a people who called themselves the Dropa. But what they were saying to him 12,000 years later made no sense. What the Dropa had written must have been one of their cultural myths, or was part of some prehistoric religious ceremony.

Or was it? When he had completed the translation the professor wrote up a paper on his findings and presented it to the university for publication. Their reaction was swift and emphatic: the paper would not be published. The Academy of Prehistory expressly forbade him to publish or even speak of his findings. The world, the academy decided, should not know about the Dropa and their fateful journey to Earth.The Dropa disks tell the story of a space probe from a distant planet that crash-landed in the Baian-Kara-Ula mountains of the Himalayas. The occupants of the spacecraft - the Dropa - found refuge in the caves of the mountains.The stones go on to say how the Dropa were unable to repair their disabled spacecraft and could not return to their home planet, and so were stranded on Earth. If that's true, have their descendents survived?

The Dogons
The Dogons are a people well known by their cosmogony, their esotericism, their myths and legends that interest foreigners at the highest point in search for culture or tourism.
The population is assessed to be about 300,000 people living in the South West of the Niger loop in the region of Mopti in Mali (Bandiagara, Koro, Banka), near Douentza and part of the North of Burkina (North west of Ouahigouya).
The Dogon's (Mali, Africa) homeland has been designated a World Heritage site for its cultural and natural significance. They are also famous for their artistic abilities and vast knowledge about astrology, especially the Sirius star, which is the center of their religious teachings. The Dogons know that Sirius A, the brightest system in our firmament, is next to a small white dwarf called Sirius B, which was not identified by western scientists until 1978. The Dogons knew about it at least 1000 years ago. Sirius B has formed the basis of the holiest Dogon beliefs since antiquity.
Western astronomers did not discover the star until the middle of the nineteenth century, and it wasn't even photographed until 1970.

The Dogons go as far as describing a third star in the Sirius system, called "Emme Ya" that, to date, has not been identified by astronomers. In addition to their knowledge of Sirius B, the Dogon mythology includes Saturn's rings and Jupiter's four major moons. They have four calendars, for the Sun, Moon, Sirius, and Venus, and have long known that planets orbit the sun.
How this Dogon's Enigmatic Scientific Knowledge about Astronomy came from?
According to their oral traditions, a race people from the Sirius system called the Nommos visited Earth thousands of years ago. The Nommos were ugly, amphibious beings that resembled mermen and mermaids. They also appear in Babylonian, Accadian, and Sumerian myths. The Egyptian Goddess Isis, who is sometimes depicted as a mermaid, is also linked with the star Sirius. The Nommos, according to the Dogon legend, lived on a planet that orbits another star in the Sirius system. They landed on Earth in an "ark" that made a spinning decent to the ground with great noise and wind. It was the Nommos that gave the Dogon the knowledge about Sirius B !

The Phoenix Lights, sometimes referred to as "the Lights over Phoenix", is the popular name given to a series of optical phenomena and sightings that took place in the sky over the U.S. states of Arizona and Nevada, and the Mexican state of Sonora on March 13, 1997. A similar incident occurred April 21, 2008,[2] although this incident was later reported to be a prank--flares attached to hot-air balloons.[3] Lights of varying descriptions were seen by thousands of people between 19:30 and 22:30 MST, in a space of about 300 miles, from the Nevada line, through Phoenix, to the edge of Tucson.

There were two distinct events involved in the incident: a triangular formation of lights seen to pass over the state, and a series of stationary lights seen in the Phoenix area. Although the United States Air Force (USAF) identified the second group of lights as flares dropped by A-10 Warthog aircraft which were on training exercises at the Barry Goldwater Range in southwest Arizona, some who observed the events believe differently. Notable among those who reported they had observed a huge carpenter's square-shaped UFO, having lights or light emitting engines, is Arizona Republican governor at the time of the incident, Fife Symington.

The advances of modern day cameras have allowed for better quality UFO pictures to become available every day. This is an UFO picture taken over a small town in Nevada, USA. It was miles away but the extreme zoom on the persons camera allowed an amazing UFO picture to be taken.

This is an example of one of the UFO pictures taken back in the days when the person who took the UFO picture was more likely to be sent to the loony bin than to believed about their UFO encounter.
