"War on Poverty"...Its hard to say exactly where & when or even if it was up some dark holler way back in the hills of Carolina or a coal camp in West Virginia or Kentucky, maybe a whisky still house in dispute over taxation? Possibly on the new highway roads north to the factories of Ohio, Detroit & Chicago? Chance is - it was all of these places & more yet -( even the “Trail of Tears”), where the clash between self-determination - freedom to ones design, butted up against land speculators, real estate agents, extractive industries, low wage slavery, forced removals & poverty of the minds & spirit. Clean water & trees cleared, soil depleted of nutrients & a wholesale campaign of cultural depreciation, dating before the times of the “Great Reconstruction - Post Civil War in Appalachia to the “Clearances” in Scotland, Plantations of Ulster & the Slave ships. ............................................................
.......From such an environment the xillbilli mau-mao was forged into existence. An open secret society from the Southern Appalachian Mountains without age or color -Black, White, Red or Brown - standing united. Designed from a congress of Melungeons - Educated to the world hillbillies, Appalachian natives made up from broad stores of humanity. Scots-Irish, Cherokee/Native American, West African, French, Portuguese/Spanish, Moors, Turks, Jews, Welsh, Germans etc... Repressed of histories & identities on the frontiers of freedom trying each & all to find a home place in this world. From these ranks came great musicians, writers & thinkers, craftsman - chair makers, blacksmiths, whisky distillers, vernacular architects, artist, designers & farmers all forming into the free form & loss coalition of the xillbilli mau-mao ............................................................
..................What is this cultural breakdown & dancehall society ? What does it mean, where’s it come from? Is it political, an old-time string band, a place, a club/organization, Mountain Mystics, Cultural Guerillas, a hip brand of togs, performance artist or crazy hillbillies?
The answer is all of these things with a few kinks thrown in the mix.......................................

As a musical form or frontier is based upon the String band musics from the Appalachian hills & upcountry South. These are the roots. Fiddle tunes played in between the cracks - black & white in a way that makes the hair stand on the back of your neck & your feet have to dance................
In a way that doesn’t make you feel that this is something “dated”, ancient yes but not some romantic folksy relic preserved to death in a cultural salt bath. The very essence of “Funk, Blues, Jazz & Rock & Roll” can be found in our music. .......................®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®

A seemingly simply homogenous population, as the myth goes? I use Xillbilli to refer to our mixed cultural makeup that has been so widely covered up & denigrated on a wholesale level for so long. The truth is that we “hillbillies” are not pure white Anglo-Saxon or Scots-Irish American stock. In culture & blood we contain stores from Native America, Africa, the Mediterranean, the Middle-East & Central & Eastern Europe. Throughout the south, there are large mixed populations/communities known by many names but one will capture them all - Melungeons.................................................. ..Mau from Mau Mau. an African secret society originating among the Kikuyu that in the 1950s used violence and terror to try to expel European settlers and end British rule in Kenya. The British eventually subdued the organization, but Kenya gained independence in 1963.
