Hello ladies and gentlemen, I'm Matthew Astaire. Surely
you've heard of me, I was really hot stuff from 1974
to 1979. Are you sure you haven't heard of me? Oh, I
forgot, the talent scout never did discover me. Oh
well, let me tell ya, I was a really great singer
and dancer during the Disco heydey, even though I
was just a kid practicing my stage show in my
bedroom, haha!

Those were the good old days! I had all the disco moves
down pat as smooth as greased lightning, and I could
hit higher notes than Barry Gibb, lol! The only
problem I had is that before I was discovered by a music
producer or talent scout the Disco era ended.

Yeah, that's a pretty big problem, lol. I was a washed-up,
undiscovered, has-been before I even entered High
School, sigh. I'm sure I would have got a record
contract with a music producer if only the Disco craze
had lasted a couple more years. I could have skipped
High School altogether and hit the big time with my
Disco talent.

Oh well, it was fun to pretend, lol. I guess everybody is
a pop/rock star in secret with an air guitar and a
pretend microphone, singing at the top of their lungs to
their favorite song on the radio, hahaha!

I'm very particular about the TV shows I enjoy. I mostly
love shows from the mid-1950s to late-1970s. Please
see my other page, "Matthew's Nostalgic Dream," for
my favorite TV shows from the 1950s/1960s. Here is a
list of some of my favorite shows from the 1970s:

1974 was the last year that original Brady Bunch episodes
were premiered on TV. At the end of the fifth
season, the 117th and final episode was aired by ABC on
March 8, 1974. It is rumored that if the Brady Bunch
show had returned for a sixth season the father
(played by Robert Reed) would have been written out of
the script without a replacement due to the
significant disagreements that Mr. Reed had with the
producers of the show. The cancellation of the Brady
Bunch series was not only a hammer blow to the TV
careers of the actors and actresses who portrayed the
Brady kids, but it also dealt a death blow to their
musical career as “The Brady Bunch.”

1974 was also the last year that original Partridge Family
episodes were premiered on TV. At the end of the
fourth season, the 96th and final episode was aired on
March 23, 1974.

After three made-for-TV movies in 1973, the Six Million
Dollar Man show began it’s first season of regular
episodes on January 18, 1974, with Lee Majors
playing the title role. This fantastic show would later
give rise to the spin-off series of The Bionic
Woman, starring Lindsay Wagner.

September 13, 1974 was the date of the premiere episode of
the Rockford Files, a very successful TV show
starring James Garner that would last six seasons.

The Brady Bunch (1969-1974)

The Brady Bunch originally aired from September 26, 1969
to March 8, 1974, and the reruns have continually
been broadcast since then – never going off the air.

The creator of the show, Sherwood Schwartz, says the
reason the Brady Bunch have become a part of
Americana is that the stories were written from the
perspective of the children and addressed various
situations that children could easily identify with (for
example, sibling rivalry, trouble with girls, and
idolizing famous people such as rock stars or baseball players.)

I watched the Brady Bunch episodes many, many times when I
was a kid. But I went through a phase during my teen
years in which I thought I was too “cool” to like
the Brady Bunch. But now as an adult I fondly
treasure the sweet piece of Americana that the Brady
Bunch represents. And my own kids love the Brady Bunch too.

I love every single episode of the original series and all
the subsequent TV specials when all the kids were
grown up. I even love the notoriously unhip Brady
Bunch Variety Hour, lol.

I know that real life is never as simple or peachy as
the fantasy world of the Brady Bunch, and I
understand that the actors had hard times in their real
lives. But for me, the Brady Bunch is symbolic of
the potential for good that is in each human being.
It’s easy to be cynical in this modern age, and
sometimes the bad news of the world is overwhelming. But
it’s nice to remember that there is a good and sweet
side to human nature.
