About Me

Just another Adelaide musician.
I've been lucky enough to play with some pretty cool folks though and maybe some of them will end up linking their spaces to this one.
I've spent a fair bit of time writing music for television and film and dance and theatre as well as gigging my stuff live and recording some of it for sale.

Forty years on and I still enjoy doing it and I'm still on a nice steep learning curve as I meet new (to me) players and find myself stretched in a new direction.
I play a few different instruments and love the challenge of a new tool to use to express myself even if I'm only expressing how awkward I find the damn thing to be.
I've dabbled in a number of styles, as different commissions have come up, from trad folk to experimental rock, classical to dance/trance, blues and jazz, hip hop and world, country and pop, even music for kids and I've loved every bar of all of it.
I've taught a bit in universities and colleges and academies which in reality was about 20% teaching and 80% learning as fresh young minds imposed themselves upon me and challenged every word I said and every note I played. Great fun. I still have a few private students, mostly young and mostly challenging. It keeps me on my toes.

My main love though has to be jamming with players that just seem to rock up on my doorstep. February 2008 brought Mani Neumeier, the legendary German drummer from "Guru Guru" and his lovely wife, Japanese percussionist Etsuko Watanabe.
A great excuse to hook up with old buddy Craig Lauritsen (one of my very favourite Australian musicians) to jam and gig.
The day Mani and Etsuko left, in rolled Larry Lush, keyboard player/sample slammer from English band "Widescreen" for another week of swapping ideas and recording nice fresh "first takes". Absolute bliss!

Dangerous Handset

When I'm not jamming with all these lovelies I'm a single dad and I'm jamming with my two sons.
Gypsy, my fourteen year old, is playing guitar and keys with a few jazz and blues bands and Tamas, his twelve year old brother, is doing the same sort of thing on fretless bass and cello.
One of our favourite players, Josh Bennett, named one of his incredible instrumentals after them and they were so moved by his generosity and knew that they'd been accepted into the world of musicians. Thanks Josh.
Currently I'm involved in this new movie along with a motley group of other Adelaide musicians!!

My Interests

Music:

Band Members: Just me and da Boyz I guess. Though I've played with some fine musicians.
In "Dancing Brat" I played with Mark Hallam, Steve Fowler, Heinz Leutringhaus, Paul (Louie) Sheppard, and guests.
With "Sca Fell Pike(s)" there was John Appleby, Kat Krauss, Mark Krauss, Julian Barnett, Billy Thackray, Anthony (Mel) Mellor, Martin (Mort) Boyd, Chris Finnen, Paul (Louie) Sheppard, Lou Kieck, a mob of African drummers and Gawd knows who else.
In the Julian Barnett Ensemble was Julian and Billy and Mel and me.
In "The Magellan Project" there was most of the above plus Chris Finnen and Belinda Edwards from the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.
In "sympathy orchestra" there were many of the above plus Craig Lauritsen and many guests including Adam Page, Renea Donogue and Ria Loof, the legendary "Baterz" and a host of others.
"Smiffy's Glass Eye" featured most of the above (Adelaide is quite incestuous!) plus endless guests.
"Digital Dreaming" was a great project with Zeus B Held, Jim Lampi, Simon MacDonald and Frank Yamma.
What a way to make a living..................... and lifelong friends.
Influences: I tend to be influenced by whatever I heard last which is probably a symptom of my advancing years and a tendency to be easily influenced.
My favourite players though, tend to be people that I have the opportunity to jam with and, therefore, analyse and be influenced by.
Having said that though, I’m still a fan of; Richard Thompson, Julian Barnett, Chris Finnen, Josh Bennett, Tim Bennett, Eric Clapton, Craig Lauritsen, Jimi Hendrix, Tom Clough, Billy Pigg, Geoff Wooff, Gustav Mahler, Edward Cowie, Stephen Whittington and Prince. ... and many others
