About Me |

At age six Barry James started piano lessons so he could learn to play the classical music he heard from his mother’s radio. Picking up the trombone in junior high gave him a taste for the style and flexibility of jazz music. Then while browsing a garage sale table he stumbled onto a beat up old guitar. Within weeks he was locking himself in his bedroom practicing for hours at a time, skipping meals and worrying his family. Barry James uses guitars, effects and electronica to create a sound that is as orchestral as it is modern. His work often brings comparisons to Peter Gabriel, Brian Eno, Radiohead and Red House Painters, yet his eponymous EP deviates from his earlier instrumental music, bringing in his emotive voice to ride effortlessly over the top of dense, orchestrated layers. He has played with many musical projects ranging from shoegaze/darkwave bands, improvisational recording groups and indie rock bands. His current projects not only include his songwriting and instrumental/film score work, but he just finished a two year stint as the lead guitarist for indie rockers Affirming the Consequent. |
