About Me |
|
Grey Melcher, I am a creator of different micro things, though I do sing, play electric bass(fretted, fretless and upright), guitar, drums and percussion, keys and some other things as well I believe that my biggest strength is in studio musical creation and live showmanship.I started experimenting with sound and recording as a small boy with a tape cassette recorder. I started playing bass at age 13 while at boarding school in the mountains.I remember scratching a quarter back and forth on the strings, I could hear the sound of a baby saying "mama" over and over again. It caused a lot of anxiety in me, but it also fueled inspiration.I did a lot of time and dimension traveling experiments as well, I visited ice caves, rolling green hills, my childhood, hell and concrete chambers. I experienced the inside of machines: the sounds, the shapes, the laws. With those came music, rhythms, words and phrases, melodies over and over again. A part of some grand yet unseen cycle, the theme of the madness.I began playing drums, synths and guitar by listening to music that inspired me and figuring out how to play it. I was taught upright bass by Eric Von Essen for a period of time, then I got a 5 string banjo and studied the Earl Scruggs style of playing as well. Ethan Holtzman (of Dengue Fever) taught me some special musical tricks as well as turning me onto various genres of music I had not previously known about. I started multi track recording in 1995 with my old time pal Adam Hicks(Rest in Peace). We wrote songs that were mostly about unpleasant things. Andrew Bones and I met in high school and bonded over a common appreciation for the Canadian rock band RUSH. I taught him what I knew on guitar then we started writing tunes together. They were mostly about nice things like: Animals, the universe of insects, majestical forests, travels to foreign places, Ice caves, love songs, winning the battle, being number 1, Pirates and other great themes. That project was called FAN OF CHARLIE with three cassette albums to show for it: A NEW PAIR OF PANTS, TRAVEL THE LANDS and IVAN AND THE BAD MACHINES spanning from 1995-98 when everything fell apart. There are also a number 30 minute improvised session tapes from late night experimentation. There really are some very great moments in those tapes. Some years later I wrote and recorded a number of new songs and put together the group BOLTS AND CONVERSATION as a means to perform them live. We played a few shows during which I joined the newly formed group JULIE with my then Synth player Nate James. I served the group for two plus years playing bass, synth, backing voice and doing some arranging. We released an LP entitled "Catch A Feeling" as well as some other unreleased things. I departed from the group in 2007 to focus my attention towards creating new music of my own.I have done some live performances of my music with the help of Natalie Friedman as well in 2008. Yes, I recently released my latest recording entitled "THE CLOCK". It's a 14 song Piece about all sorts of things!go to: www.greymelcher.com MyGen Profile Generator |
