BIO

There was a movie, if you’re old enough to remember, called The Natural, starring Robert Redford. A story about an older guy who was a natural when it came to baseball. He didn’t have a long, exciting history playing in the Minors, working his way to the Majors. He was just really good. It came to him naturally. Take that concept and make the subject matter music instead of baseball and you have DB Martin.

DB was born in Killeen, Texas. November 19th, 1962. The youngest of 6, by age 3 DB was firmly immersed in a new environment, South Bend Indiana and immersed in a family filled with music. Growing up, DB displayed musical ability singing, and playing drums, quite well. He received an art scholarship in the 3rd grade for his crayola depiction of "Fire", and had a short-lived foray into traditional music taking up the violin in the 4th grade.After graduating from high school, DB found himself at age 19, quite by happenstance, in Austin, Texas. His talent feeding off these wonderful new surroundings playing drums, writing poetry and just living. DB would spend the next decade drumming for local talents such as Sugar Williams in an R&B group called First String Connection, laying down the rhythm with a bassist who was to become the King of Sixth Street, Gerry Van King. He even had an opportunity to play drums for Austin Blues Legend, W.C. Clark. He played drums for various Austin musicians including Appa Perry, in his pre-Blues Power days. However, none of his musical ventures would stick and staring his thirties in the face DB began to become disillusioned about music being a part of his life. There was no way DB could know what lay ahead in the future that would all but thrust him into a music career.

The unforeseen marriage of DB and the piano in the summer of 1997 would set in motion events that most would describe as "amazing." A relationship was formed with this beautiful antique piano and DB. During this time, DB spent more time at the piano than anything else. DB began to formulate chords into what would become his first song composed on piano, Miracle Man, a tribute to his slain hero John Lennon. From one song, came another, then another. By the time this sudden burst of inspiration to create music was done, DB would pen the lyrics and compose the music to almost 100 songs. “To say that it was cathartic for me is an understatement. These songs are from the deepest parts of me. I quickly discovered that that’s the double edge sword of being my kind of songwriter. As a person I am very private. But my life is all there in my songs. All the blood, sweat and tears from living life for everyone to hear.”

Some have said this music "sounds like Santana or Steely Dan with Michael McDonald on vocals." Others have said that it's "Beatles meets R&B" or "Love Rock." DB says, "It just came out of me ...I don't call it anything ...I mean the terms Jazz and Rock encompass so many differring artists alone, maybe it's Jazz/Rock? Even though I was born in Texas, I grew up in the midwest nestled between Chicago and Detroit so I was heavily influenced by old school R&B and Rock in its very formative years with a heavy dose of the Beatles thrown in there. I've always loved artists with something to say and who wrote BIG music. Who doesn't like love songs?"

Jason James and DB, along with Ari Koinuma, Jimmy Joe Natoli and Paul Klemperer, have put together an amazing debut CD of 12 songs that listeners really love! Now with Vernon "Booof 7" Casell and Steve Sargent joining them live, it's obvious to see that the music has reached a new level. These are serious musicians who have created an undeniable sound. Some of the most incredible music to come to life in Austin, Texas.

Veteran songwriter Don Kirkpatrick, who has worked alongside such legends as Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra, and is co-credited with composing the theme music for the movie "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?", calls DB "The real thing".
