Im a "dreaming bass player" It all started at 6ish...with Mary...behind the upright piano in class.The hammers hitting those strings reminded me what else my fingers could do....one day.I kissed Mary to enable my dreams but never did find out who played those keys.... At 13 I bumped into my first double bass! WOW!!!! Held it,felt it,plucked that BIG E string and touched base...Those vibrations straight to the core of me.At 20 I found my first bass and pretended I could play it!! At 21ish I met my mother.....a cello stood in her front room....identical Bach Cello Suite on her music stand as mine....she put Hejira by Joni Mitchell on and said...Jaco...LISTEN!!!! And I played ever since,meeting people,going places but one thing never did change....my need to be me!! Whatever it was I knew I couldn't describe it yet I could feel it....or something! Who cares... But I can describe the dreams...always at pertinent points and as vivid now as when dreamt. Stevie Wonder, Mike Stern, Carla Bley, Mark Egan... so humble and patient, showing me how things can be done. And then the two besuited Japanese men with the wooden table, the stage in the distance and the rope from the sky.....Beautiful music!!
