About Me |
|
| The Disabilty Outreach Committee is a grassroots movement
that originally started to raise money to buy an accessible van for a
disabled young woman who had no way to get to church. Now,
DOC publishes a free monthly online news journal focusing on the
disabled entitled "The Edge." Since its' inception late last year, The Edge has grown in content and circulation, and our goal is that by next year it will be more interactive and accessible to thousands of readers everywhere. DOC is very grateful for the support we have received, and we encourage everyone to share this journal with friends and family. Also, The Edge will only survive if you provide story ideas for us. Thank you again for your support. DOC is a 501 (c) (3) Non Profit Organization. Our mission is to support and encourage the disabled by providing services to help them live independently and enhance the quality of their life. We have found that many disabled people in the community feel “invisible.” They may live in the same low-income apartment buildings, or because of the lack of transportation, they are home bound. As a result, many of their needs go unfulfilled. DOC is committed to help them become more mobile and fulfill their goals. Visit our website and read more about us. Just click here: www.doconthemove.orgDon ations are always appreciated. You may give at any Wells Fargo Bank. Make your checks out to "The Disability Outreach Committee." Thank you. |

Heroes:I love to write poetry. I hope you enjoy it. One Big Roller Skate… I was very shy at the age of thirteen I hid in my house, not wanting to be seenBut, as I watched T.V. one Tuesday night My sister, Diane, gave me an unusual invite She had some girlfriends for me to meet They met each week at a local skating rink I finally agreed to leave with her at eight But I was nervous, because I only had one big roller skate She always knew how nervous I was inside From the time we got there, she never left my side It was hard for me, being so young and insecure To meet those 15 yr. old girls, so beautiful and mature I had so much fun with all my new friends I laughed so hard; I never wanted it to end So, I started looking forward to our weekly date Even though, I only had one big roller skate Each week I watched the circling crowd, & wondered how to behave Then, I’d see my sister give me a smile and a wave How could I join them?” Its never been done But mustering all my courage, I decided to join the fun As I rolled out on the floor, I felt every stare Diane gave me strength; she was always there I never forget how she taught me not to hate The way I looked in my one big roller skate Now, with no fanfare or moral to tell I offer this small story of a shy boy coming out of his shell Occasionally, I visit that rink close to my home Quietly, I sit in the back all alone If I listen hard, I hear the echoes of her laughter so loud And in my minds eye, I still see her circling with the crowd Sometimes, lost in my memories, I’ll stay there late Thanking God for Diane, as I sit in my one big roller skate BY MARK MILLER |
