In every note and lyric of her upcoming full-length cd Flight of the Freedove, Roxanne Price beautifully explores a range of emotional and spiritual themes that do indeed signal a new beginning for the New York-based singer/songwriter. She loaned her voice to numerous stages and sessions and says now is the time to share her unique artistic vision, one that began in her musically rich and historic childhood hometown of New Orleans, Louisiana.
“Music was how I expressed myself as a child growing up in New Orleans. I was shy and introverted, but in the privacy of my room, another world opened up for me through music,” Price says. Roxanne says she became obsessed with music at nine years old, calling it a “singing addiction.”,“drinking in” the artistry of the legends in soul, rock, gospel and contemporary music. She’d sing along with Aretha Franklin, Denise Williams and Teena Marie at home, while developing a profound inner love for gospel music singing in the choir at church.
“Music was my first love, or the catalyst of love for me,” Roxanne confesses. “Even in terms of worshipping God, music was the Divine gift I used to offer my highest praise. It was my first love, my first teacher, my core foundation.” During her developmental years, she had already formed an unbreakable bond with music, so when she hit her teenage years, Roxanne dug in and got serious about music. Roxanne began working with Gaynielle and Cyrille Neville and performing with a host of accomplished musicians including Renard Poche, Raymond Weber and George Porter. Early on, Roxanne says, “Music was my secret place, my telephone call to the Universe. I could expand, imagine, connect, dream and travel to unknown places through music.” “I was becoming socially conscious and finding my voice. I wrote lyrics and prose that reflected those ideals,” she says.
“Music is a language,” she says, speaking about music as if it were a tangible entity you could hold in your hands. “Even if you don’t know the language it is delivered in, you still understand it and feel its vibration. I never know what I will pull out of this individual sea of creativity, but the experience of music has me hooked, and the journey never ends.” Roxanne says she wants to make music “to uplift, to heal, to incite dialogue, and mostly to bring joy and hope” to listeners. “I want them to see themselves in my music, and to once again believe in the good things,” she says. “Believe in love – believe in faith, hope and love.” Roxanne pauses to look back on her musical journey, and looks ahead to where that journey will lead. “Somewhere in my songs is a gem of faith. I still believe that every cloud has a silver lining, and that every situation provides an opportunity to choose fear or faith, and to grow and discover and learn. Life is a beautiful gift, and I’m blessed to be a vessel that is allowed to share the gift of music to others. I didn’t choose music; it chose me.
