Roger Smith is Chefkirk, also one half of the all vegan noise outfit Insects with Tits . This release shows an evolution in the Chefkirk sound, and it's probably the loudest release on 804noise thus far. This realease see's Chefkirk going completely raw without any editing and it's somewhat rhythmic making it feel very live and full of energy. If you'd hooked up a transducer to the key at the end of Ben Franklin's kite it might have sounded something like this: A slowly gathering storm filled with birdish chirps in the upper-mid and a pea-soup fog of bristling drone, until everything erupts into the kind of cleansing rain Travis Bickle dreamed of. Dark ambience is the focus but not the rule, as there's an earthy beauty inside these howling machines. Cells divide, electromagnetism radiates, blood pumps, gravity pulls. It's noise music, yes, but the kind that envelops and keeps you company on lonely evenings.

ENE's Scott Hudgins is an experimental veteran to the Richmond experimental community. This recording was taken from his performance with past ENE collaborator Robert Miller. The approach on this recording can be described as “samplers without borders," as the set moves from the gurgling interiority of “Persiasaki” to the low-riding high desert funk of “Pimp My Ride In Downtown Democratised Baghdad,” then further East still to the eerie Subcontinental headspace of the popping “Wasted Restoration.” On the closing “Hello” a surprise voice from the ghost of MTV past brings us home in style. ENE began in 1990 when Scott Hudgins, Robert Miller and Paul Bethel first collaborated. Since that time they’ve released eight full-length CDs and four split records, in addition to remixes and compilation tracks for labels like RRR, Staalplaat, ZK Records. Richmond, Virginia’s James McCrea aka Narcotic Dreams extracts the sound palette from the “Castlevania 3: Dracula’s Curse” NES game and transforms the sonic guts of an innocuous amusement into a dark and anxious mini-suite. As lo-bit game excerpts evoke memories from the Golden Age of B-movie horror, dense shards of metallic distortion ramp up the tension and place the music squarely within the confines of the contemporary experimental noise scene. The first release in the 804Noise Limited series documents a brilliant live performance in Richmond, Virginia. In November 2004 past, future, man, and machine all plowed recklessly into a busy intersection and two MiniDisc players were on hand to capture the resulting carnage. At the city’s Artworks gallery noted improvisers Marty McCavitt (laptop) and Darius Jones (alto sax), who record and perform together as Birds in the Meadow, were joined by the inventive Brian Jones on percussion, with Kenneth Yates of Harm Stryker providing electronics and processing. What followed were four distinct voices in deep conversation, working together to create an exceptionally detailed and constantly shifting tapestry of sound. Incorporating elements of classic free jazz, European improv, modern composition, and out noise, the Processing Quartet remains accessible to any fan of adventurous music.[MR] Packaged in hand screened sleeves, with yellow ink on black card stock. The latest release from Narcotic Dreams is an unsettling exploration of the emotional possibilities of dark ambience. Ranging from hushed, creaking drones that linger on the threshold of audibility "Tempest" to cathartic outpourings of jarring feedback “Stillness Shattered” "Vertigo", the music unfolds like an experimental film with everything removed but the shadows. Electric guitar, bass, and organ are processed as they’re recorded to create textures far removed from their instrumental origins. The result is by turns tense, meditative, harsh, and blissful. This split CD brings together two artists with varied approaches to noise and abstraction that combine to form a complex vision of the possibilities of sound. Monolith Zero ’s world brings to mind dimly lit interiors, where small buzzes on the threshold of audibility threaten to erupt at any moment and the tiniest strands of sound carry an almost unbearable tension. Small movements carry great weight inside this space, where raw electricity is guided, channeled, and shaped, but never tamed. Monolith Zero’s terse economy is at times reminiscent of Japanese masters like Ryoji Ikeda and Toshimaru Nakamura, but this music develops according to its own unpredictable rhythm, with extreme dynamic shifts lurking around the corner. The music of Never Presence Forever is above all immersive. These wavering drones fused with fits of distortion suggest tortured conflict and cry out for volume. Reference points like Merzbow (whom Never Presence Forever has remixed) and Megaptera place these dark ambient/death industrial pieces in a realm where the everyday sounds of technology (the transformer hum in a vacant lot littered with refuse, a blast furnace echoing in a concrete stairwell) express ominous atmospheres. The tracks flow one into the next forming a coherent 20-minute piece that ranges from quiet, meditative low-end tones to shrieking metallic scrapes.[MR] First pressing of 1,000 copies.
