| History: In brief—The Cane Corso has its origin in Italy. It was originally used in the hunting of large wild animals and also as a war dog. For years now he has been a loyal and loving family companion and protector. Temperament: The Cane Corso is an intelligent and level-headed dog, being very loving and affectionate with the family and especially the children it protects. It is suspicious with strangers and makes an excellent guard and watchdog. Merely its looks are enough to scare off any unwanted intruder. It is a docile dog in the house, but needs a place to take daily walks. The large breed thrives on active playtime and vigorous runs. Cane Corsos need proper early socialization. This is of utmost importance. Puppy obedience is highly recommended both for basic obedience and also just for the socialization aspect. It is a lot of fun for the puppy and owner. Cane Corsos love being included as part of your family. If possible they will follow you everywhere. The Cane Corso is a dominant breed. If well socialized it does not go looking for a fight, but will never back down if challenged. It is very accepting and protective of other pets in the home. Physical characteristics: The Cane Corso is a large dog, being very strong and compact. It is a shorthaired dog and requires very little grooming. It has a very broad and deep muzzle with a slight under bite. The etymology of the name "Corso": is still uncertain. The most credible hypothesis are those which indicate Greek origins: KORTOS = wall and from the Latin: COHORS = guard of the courtyard. Until recently the oldest documentation citing the name of the "Cane Corso", consisted of a few poems and some prose dating from 1500. |
