About Me

i am at home in gießen (germany), where i work at the university (giving courses on medieval english, etc.).
i like to spend spare time either with my wife or with a good book - my current reading list includes Mark Salomon's Simplicity, George MacDonald's sermons and books on the history of English. Good DVDs, CDs and a Nintendo DS aren't that bad, either.
i get angry about any pejorative misrepresentation of past times (or what C.S. Lewis calls "chronological snobbery").
i heartily support the band Virgin Black - check out their Requiem!
i like to make omelettes.
CREDO VT INTELLEGAM.

some interesting philosophical quotes that i've stumbled upon:

"We all want progress, but if you're on the wrong road, progress means doing an about-turn and walking back to the right road; in that case, the man who turns back soonest is the most progressive."
- C.S. Lewis

"The universe would be to me no more than a pasteboard scene, all surface and no deepness, on the stage, if I did not hope in God. I will not say believe, for that is a big word, and it means so much more than my low beginnings of confidence."
- George MacDonald

"'Can that be true that loves the night?' said the king.
'The darkness is the nurse of light,' answered the Shadow.
'Can that be true which mocks at forms?' said the king.
'Truth rides abroad in shapeless storms,' answered the Shadow."
- George MacDonald

"If the whole universe has no meaning, we should have never found out that it has no meaning: just as, if there were no light in the universe and therefore no creatures with eyes, we should never know it was dark. Dark would be without meaning."
- C.S. Lewis

"Every one of the great revolutionists, from Isaiah to Shelley, have been optimists. They have been indignant, not about the badness of existence, but about the slowness of men in realizing its goodness."
- G.K. Chesterton
