I lived my youthful and teenage years in Sliema. Always fascinated by music, when I was 10 years old, my father bought me a little toy keyboard and from than onwards I never looked back. Starting by playing back music which I heard on TV and radio. During the early 80's I started to take interest in Ska music, especially in the 2-Tone Ska boom. Till this very day, ska music was an essential part of my life, and never quit listening to this genre of music. Obviously, I was also listening to Rock steady, punk and Reggae. I never learned music. Toni Sant tried to teach me, and I'm very grateful, but I realised that I'm too nervous, and, above all, I hate theories, so, therefore I cannot read a score. But I guess I'm a natural born musician and enjoy making music. To be more precise, music is part of my bloodstream and without it I'm nothing. In other words, Music is my soul. It keeps the blood pumping into my veins. Back in 1983-85 I used to hang out with my friends, around Tigne and in front of the Sliema Chalet. We were a bunch of teenage punks, skinheads and rude boys, trying to be different from the rest. We had that particular anti-establishment look, because of our clothing, hairstyles and aggressive attitude. Formed part of an electro-pop band, at Tigne barracks, called The Joy Circuit back in 1986-87. We were very much influenced by Depeche Mode, Japan, Art of Noise and Kraftwerk. The band was formed by Jody Fiteni (vocals), Kevin O'Neill (drums & programable percussion), Jon Debattista (Keyboards) and myself also on keyboards. Jon, early in 1987, was replaced by another keyboardist named Roger Micallef. We played live several times, particularly with Toni Sant's popular band, Artwork. After the split (1988) , the other band members, Kevin, Jody and Roger, formed other bands, but instead, I decided to hibernate, and for a very long time. Though I still continued to make music but just as a hobby and for my own pleasure. During this time, back in late 1990, I started to experiment musically with my first computer, which was a modified Amiga 500. I still love this computer to this very day. During 1994/95 I worked on various music projects with Jody Fiteni and my Australian cousin Damian Paris. In 1999 I made my first step forward (about time!) by making the music for a song by the name of "Devastazzjoni" (Devastation) -lyrics by Joe M. Farrugia and sang by Dominic Cini, for the festival Fl-Ghaqda l-Melodija. It placed 3rd by Jury votes and 1st place by the audience. This song was about the Um El Faroud tragegy which happened in Malta Drydocks back in 1995. I vanished for another 6 years. Lately I composed the music for several theatrical comedies & plays, including Madame X, which was staged at the Manoel Theatre last October. I also made several musical arrangements for veteran Maltese singer Enzo Gusman. Composed most of the music for popular local TV episodes "Dejjem Tieghek Becky", including the opening theme. Right now I'm setting up my new home recording studio. I'm also working on some promo music and on a signiture tune for a local radio programme. Also, in the pipeline: The musical arrangement for the football team, Jeepers, Malta's 5 a side football Champions for 2007. By the way, before I leave, the return of The Joy Circuit is imminent, so keep your eyes and ears open ;-) |
