| I find the history of Lake Barton, Barton County, Kansas fascinating. Lake Barton was originally built in 1850 as a resevoir for the steam powered locomotives that would fill up with water on the way to early beginings of a town called Hoisington Kansas. The name of the locomotive at the time was "Lady of the Lake". The lake also was a water supply for the early settlers of the area as well as a place where cattle could be watered. In the 1920s cement dam walls were added and the resevoir was turned into a resort where many could come and relax durring the summer months as well as fish and row boats across. In the 1960's through the mid 70's, Lake Barton was a club where I enjoyed many a weekend fishing and swimming. But troubled times lay ahead for the lake as Colorado shut off the water supply to the state of Kansas, slowly choking the life from the lake. Now all that remains is a dry lake bed that you can walk across. It resembles a meadow of sorts. With fishing docks that tower over some of the trees and a old water release tower located at the north side of what is left. Lake Barton is now surrounded by a forest with walking trails that can also be used by bicycles. I will be adding more pictures as they become avalable to this page. If anyone has pictures of the lake while it still had water in it I would definately be interested in seeing them. You can enjoy a slide show of the pictures that I have so far on this page.
