NARC. Magazine by Alice Vincent I can't work out what A Fire Born In Dallas is about. However, It's a dancey little tune with a fantastic chord structure. In fact, the more you listen to it, the more it grows into an absolute belter. Whatever it is they're singing about, it is, apparently, "everything you've always wanted". Until I figure out what that is, the song will suffice very nicely indeed, thankyou. B-side Wolverine Figurine is somewhat heavier, and lacks the immediately likeable impact of the previous track. Still, it's one that promises to be good live, and you can't say that for many b-sides. There's a nice little remix of the single too on there. I could big it up all day. I wont. Just go out and buy it. Subba-Cultcha Single Of The Month The last time I saw a lake catch fire was at the capital’s millennium “do”. With hints of Bluebird, Foo Fighters & early Idlewild these guys are making me wanna party like it’s 1999!!! Genius… Manchester Music by JA Newcastle’s Ever Since The Lake Caught Fire, caught the eye of MM a couple of years back when we chanced upon them at a private party and then a NE showcase event during In The City. Their mathematically induced alt.rock keeps the spirit of At The Drive In and yourcodenameis:milo very much alive. What they also add is a youthful vigour and appetite for twisted guitar hooks. Both “A Fire Born In Dallas” and “Wolverine Figurine” are the sound of controlled angst, with the latter smoothing out into an admirable chorus of electric guitar shots and EMO melodies. A sharper sound from the city that has so far delivered some of the UK’s most intriguing rock music in recent years. 4/5 Rock Midgets by Phill May Highly promising Newcastle act ESTLCF are back (after time off finishing university) with their début single 'A Fire Born In Dallas'. There's hints of At The Drive-In, similarly long-named And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, and even a whiff of early yourcodenameis:milo, but all combined into a refreshingly original sound. The single itself combines an Idlewild-esque guitar with Sonic Youth's indie and ATD-I's chaotic punk. It's backed with an even better b-side in the ramshackle but appealing 'Wolverine Figurine' and a simply fantastic remix from the bizarrely named 'Razmataz Lorry Excitement'. Independent and surprisingly catchy, ESTLCF are well worth looking out for. 4/5 Room Thirteen by Michelle Moore They formed in 2005, but it has taken them this long to gain consideration for their music. Indie rock at one of its high points is what this track is. Beginning with a catchy little guitar riff that remains constant through much of the track is what first grabs the attention of a listener. As the track continues, the guitar rhythm makes for a vigorous performance, something uplifting where passions run high. 9/13 Noize Makes Enemies.co.uk by Sophie Thompsett Too heavy for the indie set, and not heavy enough for the rock crowd, Newcastle’s Ever Since The Lake Caught Fire sit as musical misfits, filed somewhere between post-hardcore and prog. Unhelpful musical brackets aside, their debut effort ‘A Fire Born In Dallas’ is fuzzy, dizzy and impassioned, oozing influences like American weirdoes And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, Fugazi and At The Drive In. B-side ‘Wolverine Figurine’ is a much heavier, more warped affair, reminiscent of iForward, Russia!, unsurprising considering iF,R! frontman Tom Woodhead recorded it. Intense, chaotic and commendable simply because it includes a remix by the mighty Razmataz Lorry Excitement! Die Shellsuit, Die! by Rachael Bevan It’s a bit of a monster. Parallels between this sound and those of ‘...Trail of Dead’ and ‘At The Drive In’ are instantly recognisable, but ESTLCF add their distinctly British spin to the proceedings, and in result produce an amazing blend of everything good about the British indie scene at the moment. The b-side to this track, “Wolverine Figurine” isn’t as instantly hard-hitting, and isn’t as well recorded or produced, but is still mighty tune none-the-less. The ‘Razmataz Lorry Excitement’ remix of “A Fire Born In Dallas” is thrown in for good measure, and aside it being a great re-mix, it brings so many more elements of the single to the attention of the listener and enhances the fantastic punky melodic undertones that I must say I hadn’t really noticed in the original version. A stunning debut, and definitely a name to look out for.
