About David Gilmour

Born Springburn, Glasgow, Scotland. However, the family moved to Bishopbriggs on the outskirts of Glasgow, where he formed his first band with brother Billy. Educated at Allan Glen's School, Glasgow (along with B A Robertson)
Married to the wonderful Dee, who acts as manager, tour manager and all round support.
He is a member of the International Songwriters Association.
Started playing at 15 with his brother Billy and a few friends including Derek Hamilton and Mike Miller (now a pro golfer). He and Bill stuck with it and worked with a number of people including Harry Driscoll (see Revolver) under a variety of names. Eventually they settled on "Playground" which ran for a few years and which at one time included Brian Robertson, who went on to join "Thin Lizzy". From the road crew, Davy McLafferty became tour manager for "The Pretenders" and Sandy worked with "Thin Lizzy"
Bill joined "Gold" with Harry Driscoll and a few other people - Billy Robertson and Jimmy Grant amongst them and David joined "Anthem". That band suffered a major setback when all the gear was stolen, just as they seemed to be on the verge of some success - Radio 1 was interested; as were a couple of record companies and producers. Several tracks of original material were recorded but never commercially released. "Anthem" kept going for a while after that, but the heart had really been knocked out of the band. Playing social clubs to pay for the replacement gear was soul destroying. (thanks are still due to McCormacks Music in Glasgow and many friends for their help and support)
David and John Williams from Anthem formed a writing partnership and the short-lived "Direct Drive" with Matt Neilson and Steve Irvine (Lloyd Cole and the Commotions).
After a break, David approached John Williams with an idea to form "Revolver" which would be a 60's revival band. They roped in Harry and Bill, added drummer Ray Hackett and produced "The Revolver EP" on 7" vinyl, copies of which still sell (some mint copies are still available from David). "Revolver" played some memorable gigs including support to "The Drifters"
Career considerations took David and Dee to the east coast of Scotland where he met and formed a duo with Doug Low - "Twilight Zone".
David and Dee settled in Somerset in 2000, where David performs as a solo act, as well as working with other musicians.
"So What?" was formed with friends Teri, Jamei Roberts (ex Mungo Jerry), Lee Holloway-smith and Dave "Parky" Parkington. Tony Metcalfe played keyboards for a time, but other commitments meant he couldn't work full time with the band. A 4 track CD was recorded at Beehive Studios in August 2005.
David left the band to concentrate on writing new material and getting the current album together.

Influences: Grew up with the usual 1960's stuff, as well as the British blues bands of the late 60's , but soon got heavily into Steely Dan, The Doobie Brothers and most of the US West Coast stuff as well as The Allman Brothers and that southern rock thing.British bands like Brinsley Schwartz and Elvis Costello were a big influence. Still a great admirer of Nick Lowe. However, just about anything is an inspiration and a learning experience. Heroes?:Guitar - Peter Green, Clapton, Elliott Randall & Hendrix(of course): Bass - Walter Becker, the late Phil Lynott: Keyboards - the late Billy Preston, Stevie Wonder: Drums - Steve Gadd: Vocals - Paul Rodgers, Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin, Paul Carrack: Writing - Donald Fagen,Walter Becker, Brian Wilson, Nick Lowe, Bob Dylan -A real mix!
Sounds Like: Don't really sound like anyone else. I've been told the album sounds like Phil Spector meets country rock, but I don't know about that.
Record Label: Gilden Records
Type of Label: Indie
