About Me |
|
| Alula was born in Ethiopia, but started his musical career in Germany while attending medical school. He was discoverd by a music producer when he was playing in clubs, and soon put out a record which did well. He since then went professionally into music. Having success in Europe, and abroad, Alula went home to Ethiopia in the mid eighties as a very popular singer, but fell afoul the government of Mengistu Haile-Mariam when he refused to join the communist party as all prominent performers were required to do for propaganda purposes. Alula spent two years in prison. When the Mengistu government fell in 1991, he sought asylum in the United States.Alula had worked with Tony Alvarez a local L.A. native in the early eighties in a earlier version of the band with many other local musicians. They reunited in 2005 to once again spread the word of love and joy in Alula's powerful music. The Masada band was started with his old friend at the helm, and soon put together a world wide group of musicians from Sweden, Nigeria, South Africa, West Africa, and a couple southern California locals to round out this powerful world music band. The Masada Band. Keep posted for up coming gigs. .. | |
