About Me

Born in 1986 in Mt. Airy, Surry County, NC. Thick Scottish blood. Son of a devoted preacher. Took up guitar, banjo, and then fiddle. Is mainly a fiddler and obviously a guitar picker, mostly a drinker, randomly a composer, sometimes a preacher, occasionally a bard, probably friendly, imposingly a banjo player, too often a gambler, frequently a bum, and never too worried. Continues to play and perform in the southern states for concerts, workshops, medicine shows, square dances, wizard showcases, barn dances, festivals, swing dances, hoodoo rituals, oprys, grand high meetings of any sort of grand highery and the occasional wedding...

My Interests

Music:

Band Members: Andy Edmonds: two-finger guitar, clawhammer and two-finger banjo, fiddle. Also notoriously seen on many occasions playing banjo and guitar with Benton Flippen.
Influences: My musician kinfolk: Arvil Edmonds, Roger Upchurch... Cory Reynolds, Seth Boyd, Beth Hartness, Adam Hurt, Ken Bloom (and his bowed dulcimer madness!); ...appalachian old-timey music... some early blues and ragtime stuff... My top 3 favorite fiddlers of all time: Benton Flippen, Arthur Smith, and Paul Warren... I love the old scratchy recordings the most! Kessinger Brothers, Snuffy Smith and Pappy Sherrill, Charlie Poole, Doc Roberts, the early Bob Wills stuff, Stripling Brothers, Bill Monroe (with Tommy Magness), Skillet Lickers, Sam and Kirk McGee, Deford Bailey... also the local folks Tommy, Ben, and B.F. Jarrell, Fred Cockerham, Charlie Lowe, Gilmer Woodruff, Tom Hamlin, Kyle Creed, Pate and Leroy Martin, Robert Sykes, and tons more! Fiddlin' Arthur Smith (the most influential southern fiddler of all time!), Hobart Smith, Blind Boy Fuller, Dock Walsh,Etta Baker, John Dee Holeman, Jack Guthrie, Riley Puckett, Sonny Terry (best french harp ever!), Kirk and Sam McGee, and many, many, more oldtimers.
Sounds Like: .."Pretty Little Girl" by Benton and his Smokey Valley Boys at Galax 2008. L to R: William Flippen, Andy Edmonds, Benton Flippen, Verlin Clifton, Frank Bode.Benton Flippen, Frank Bode, and myself playing "Flop-Eared Mule". I had never played it on banjo before. Benton's notorious for pulling out tunes we haven't played in ages or never played at all.
