BOSTON BALLET 2008-09 SEASON NIGHT OF STARS A Boston Ballet Benefit Gala Performance ONE NIGHT ONLY OCTOBER 10, 2008 Altankhuyag Dugaraa Photo Credit: Gene Schiavone Join Boston Ballet for a dazzling evening of dance featuring the entire company! Night of Stars will be an evening of artistry you will never forget. CINDERELLA OCTOBER 16–26, 2008 Lorna Feijóo Photo Credit: Angela Sterling Boston Ballet launches its 2008–2009 season with this timeless story, told in a fresh new way by acclaimed choreographer James Kudelka. Premiering in Boston in 2005 to rave reviews and perfectly matched with Prokofiev’s evocative score, Cinderella is the magical tale of a plucky housemaid’s undying belief in happiness beyond her drudgery, and the transforming power of love. With Art Deco-inspired scenery and stylish Roaring-Twenties costumes, this production features all the enchantment of the well-known fairytale, daringly re-imagined for a contemporary audience. An evening sure to delight audiences with its whimsical elegance — and pumpkins that appear in surprising places! BLACK AND WHITE FEBRUARY 12-15, 2009 Carlos Molina and Jared Redick Photo Credit: Eric Antoniou The work of Jirí Kylián, one of Europe’s most fascinating and celebrated choreographers, returns to Boston Ballet with his Black and White program. Falling Angels, a mesmerizing study in motion and minimalism, and Sarabande, a powerful display for six men, gave audiences a glimpse of Kylián’s unique and potent vision when they were presented here in 2005. Playing with space, shape and contrast, Kylián’s work will challenge, enlighten and move you. Boston Ballet is the first company outside of Nederlands Dans Theater to perform Kylián’s Black and White series and is exclusive to Boston Ballet. JEWELS February 26-March 8, 2009 Melanie Atkins Photo Credit: Eric Antoniou A full-length ballet in three parts, George Balanchine’s Jewels premiered at New York City Ballet in 1967. Presenting a miniature history of classical dance, Jewels references ballet’s French origins, Russia’s imperial style, and Balanchine’s own take on the art form. Critically acclaimed since its premiere, each act of Jewels is distinct in both music and mood. “Emeralds” is set to music by Gabriel Fauré, “Rubies” to Stravinsky’s Capriccio for Piano and Orchestra and “Diamonds” to Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 3 in D Major, Op. 29. Don’t miss Balanchine’s magnificent trio - a Boston Ballet Company Premiere. SLEEPING BEAUTY April 23–May 3, 2009 Rie Ichikawa and Heather Myers Photo Credit: Angela Sterling With its scenario drawn from the stories of Perrault, a glorious score by Tchaikovsky, and choreography after Marius Petipa, The Sleeping Beauty has been enchanting audiences of all ages for over a century. But more than the tale of a princess, a spell and a kiss, The Sleeping Beauty is a tour de force of classical dancing, with brilliant solo choreography and ensemble pageantry. This grand-scale production, with sets and costumes by David Walker, spotlights the accomplishments of the entire Company. DIAGHILEV'S BALLETS RUSSES CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION May 14-17, 2009 April Ball in The Prodigal Son Photo Credit: Eric Antoniou This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Ballets Russes, established in 1909 by the Russian impresario Serge Diaghilev. The Ballets Russes became one of the most influential ballet companies of the 20th century, presenting ground-breaking artistic collaborations among choreographers, composers, and artists. Boston Ballet celebrates with classic works by Balanchine, Nijinsky and Fokine. Resident Choreographer Jorma Elo will premiere a new work, his sixth for Boston Ballet, to Igor Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du Printemps.
