Carter Mangan had the same kind of jitters after riding past the studio one day on the bus. The Newark teens didn't know one another during their separate moments of indecision. But after taking the plunge to shed their fears, they have spent the past several months collaborating at Cobblestone Records, a record label on Bergen Street that shows youths like them the ins and outs of the business. Bennett raps; Mangan produces beats. They've been there since the summer picking up audio, recording and engineering skills from Marcel "BLACK" Green, owner of the label. It has kept them busy, out of the kind of trouble that too much free time can cause. Mangan says he wasn't doing anything crazy, just hanging out, until he finally decided, like Bennett, to walk into the studio. It's been a haven to the teens and others like them who live, eat, breath and sleep music. "So, how much time do you spend here?" They bust out laughing. It's been so much that they can hardly wait until the place opens. For Bennett, as soon as he wakes up, he's headed for the studio, which is just upstairs from the basement apartment he lives in with his mother. The hours there allowed him to spend his days constructively until he recently left for Maine to study Web design in a Job Corps program. Mangan, a student at the Institute of Audio Research in Manhattan, comes in the morning and again when school is over in the evening. He's in the beginning phases of the New York program and has yet to get his hands on the equipment. But at Cobblestone, he's able to jump right in to produce his beats and combine what he's learned at school. Nurturing this passion of Newark youth is what Green envisioned when he started the label. "We're trying to bring the industry here," Jeff Billingsley said. Face it: Everyone doesn't want to be a doctor, lawyer and accountant. Many youths, not just in Newark, are driven by entertainment, as evidenced by the popularity of "American Idol." Cobblestone, which recently struck a distribution deal to handle its projects, will take on more youths in April. They will be working with youths getting out of jail through the TEEM (Transitional Education Employment Management) Gateway program at Rutgers University. TEEM Director Ken Karamichael said Cobblestone will be a part of its vocational programs to help youths get hands-on experience with music, video and production. "A group of young people we have are interested in pop culture and entertainment," Karamichael said. "His studio is perfect for what we need." The youths, however, not only will get exposure, but they will produce a DVD with a nonviolent message. The goal is to support the work of Operation CeaseFire, a law enforcement plan to cut down on gun violence. "When murders happen, they flood the community with fliers, posters and messages," Karamichael said. "If we put a video in front of them, there's less chance of it being discarded." This avenue through Cobblestone gives another segment of society an outlet, much as it did for Bennett and Mangan. Where it takes them is anybody's guess, but at least they'll be able to explore options. Instead of performing, some may find they're better at production and editing while others flourish on the marketing and business side. Bennett and Mangan have a hard time finding the words to express what this opportunity has done for them. It's provided hope for their dreams and confidence to pursue them. Walking through the next door won't be a problem. They took the most important step already. The first one. Barry Carter covers Newark. WWW.SCARLETNATION.COM November 14, 2006BY John OtterstedtJeff Billingsley was watching Rutgers defeat then 3 Louisville on national television from the office of his Newark-based record label Cobblestone Records when something came over him. He had to be there. Not later. Now.So Billingsley jumped in the car with two of his recording artists, Slimm Chance (26) and Mic Caine (24), and headed down to New Brunswick. They didn't catch the end of the game, but the enthusiasm they saw on and around the campus left an impression that they wouldn't soon forget."I came down after the game because I wanted to feel what the energy was like and how the people were responding to the success that the football team was having," said Billingsley. "We were on Easton Avenue, the street was blocked off, and were giving out CD's when suddenly we saw some of the players coming down the road."After soaking up the atmosphere – and watching the fans embrace the Scarlet Knights – inspiration struck."The artists (Slimm Chance and Mic Caine) came back to me and said 'We have to do a song, we have to do a song!'"With that, they were off. The car ride home and the rest of the night were spent brainstorming ideas and planning for a song that they hoped to debut a short time later – a very short time later."We got an 18 year old producer named Roc to produce it the next day," said Billingsley. "All original. No samples. They picked up the track, picked up the lyrics, and recorded it in an hour."Then came the return trip to New Brunswick, this time with a stack of "Rutgers Anthem" CD's. The first two stops were the Golden Rail and Harvest Moon, two places where they were bound to find Rutgers students on a busy Saturday night. From there they headed over to several other New Brunswick hot spots, including the famed grease trucks."To make a long story short, the feedback was crazy," said Billingsley. "They were even playing it out of the grease trucks. People were responding to it immediately. We gave out the copies to whoever we saw – students, alumni, whoever. As soon as we got back [to the office], we put it on the myspace page."It didn't take long for the scarletnation.com faithful to find the audio file at the cobblestonerecords.com web site. It has been downloaded by nearly 3,000 fans since Sunday."It's just amazing because the beat is great and the lyrics are creative and fitting....and at the same time, it's about something that we love," said Rutgers student Seth Anagnostis. "It makes you think about the season and the Louisville game in particular and gets you excited to watch this team again."The song has even spread beyond the insulated confines of the Rutgers fan message boards."It is good to see Rutgers fever spreading throughout the state and into the music industry," said Saddle Brook High School football coach, David Schuman. "GO RU!"The early buzz created by the song has been gratifying to Billingsley on several levels. For starters, he is happy his company could honor a college football team that he says is truly making the state proud. He also is excited because it was created by members of another program that he holds dear to his heart, The Ceasefire All Stars, a Rutgers-sponsored non-profit group aimed at teaching at-risk children that there are alternatives to violence. Their message is reinforced by introducing kids to the music industry and mentoring them as they learn the various components of the business."We work with young people and teach them about the music business, teaching them that you can have a positive message with music without it being corny," said Billingsley. The Ceasefire All Stars tour the state, performing and spreading their positive message to children and teens. Billingsley says that the Rutgers Anthem will undoubtedly be added to the group's set list."Everybody knows that Rutgers is real big right now. Because Ceasefire is a Rutgers project, it all just fits." BIG ACE is one of the hottest and most profound M.C.s ever. Born and raised in the Brick City, ( Newark, NJ), BIG ACE is a lyrical beast, Producer, and Song Writer that is destined to become one of Hip Hops Future Elite Artist.Even without the backing of a major label record deal BIG ACE has accomplished a lot.
