| Musica Popular Brasileira(MPB), Bossa Nova, Chorinho and Samba. Add to these ingredients the taste of Jazz and a pinch of Latin, Caribbean and African flavor. The percussionist, vocalist and composer Joca Perpignan, 35, has produced, after an international career of more than 15 years, his first solo project with all these ingredients and many more in his musical melting pot. The result is his first solo album Entreventos(Lumiar Discos), in which he sings and plays his own compositions and arrangements, recorded in the three countries where he has lived: Brazil, the U.S. and Israel.With his multicultural background, Joca and his band have presented his music at international jazz festivals and clubs, such as the 2003 Red Sea Jazz Festival, Israel, the 2004 St. Petersburg Jazz Festival, Russia; the Lapataia Jazz Festival 2005 in Uruguay, the Zinc Bar in New York City, the Mistura Fina, Espaco Musical Bis and sala Baden Powel in Rio de Janeiro.As a musical educator, he has taught and has conducted workshops at such institutions and events as the Souza Lima Conservatory in Sao Paulo, Brazil, the Boston Music Community Center, USA, the Santiago Conservatory of Contemporary music, Chile, and the Drum’n Beat Festival, Israel. Joca has also been rhythm instructor to the world-famous percussion group Mayumana.As a percussionist, he has played in several countries such as Spain, Portugal, Croacia, Italia, Cape Verde, Australia, and shared the stage with masters such as: the Brazilian mandolinist Armandinho, the legendary Cuban saxophonist, Paquito D’Rivera, the vibraphonist Victor Mendoza, and the steel pan player Ron Reed. Joca has also performed alongside the Brazilian singers Maúcha Adnet and Luciana Souza.Currently living in Brazil, Joca has been working with top artists such as: arranger/singer Celia Vaz, singer Aurea Martins, saxophonist Leo Gandelman, DJ Marcelinho DaLua, pianist Leandro Braga, Garrafieira group, the Samba-Jazz Orchestra, and others. | |
