| Mission Statement: --The primary objective of the Fauna Foundation is to create a protected environment for neglected, abused farm and domestic animals and former biomedical research chimpanzees. It also aims to foster through education a better understanding of these creatures. --Founded in 1997 by Dr. Richard Allan and Gloria Grow, the Fauna Foundation, a nonprofit organization, is dedicated to creating a caring environment for neglected and abused farm and circus animals, and former biomedical research chimpanzees, and to fostering through education a better understanding of these creatures. --In 1990, Richard and Gloria bought a house and 100 acre farm in Carignan, some 20 minutes from downtown Montreal, with the intention of getting away from the city. The farm initially housed 3 sheep, some goats, chickens and a few turkeys. The barn had just undergone some renovations when Richard was asked to help in the rescue of a carriage horse named Jethro. While "on the job" Jethro suffered from road rage when harnessed to a calèche, an open carriage used to provide tourists a leisurely look at Montreal. He tried to pull the calèche over the top of a car. Learning of Jethro's story through friends, Richard rescued the horse from the meat packing plant just in time. That was the beginning. The farm at Carignan, home of the Fauna Foundation, now houses over 200 animals including horses, cows, pigs, goats, ducks and numerous other birds, llamas, rheas, emus and sheep…and 12 chimpanzees. --Over the years the farm has expanded as more and more animals were rescued. In 1997, Richard and Gloria undertook to build a sanctuary for 15 retired bio-medical laboratory chimpanzees. Sadly, the Fauna chimpanzee family has since been diminished by four (4) with the untimely deaths of Pablo (aged 31, in October 2001),Annie (aged 42, in January 2002), Donna Rae (aged 39, in March 2005) and Billy Jo (aged 37, in February 2006) . On a happier note, Toby chimpanzee, rescued from the St Felicien zoo, joined the Fauna chimpanzee family in 2002. --In 1997 the Fauna Foundation was established to provide a home for neglected and forgotten animals and create a protected environment for wildlife. The land is mainly agricultural, but there is a lake, a river and a young forest with many varieties of native flora and fauna. The Fauna Foundation is now committed to preserving this land by continuing to plant native flora to encourage local species to populate the area and migratory birds to stop by providing food and nesting areas.
