| The Waterford Sessions is a 12-track collection written and recorded in the winter of '06 - '07 by the quiet force that is, yours truly, Andrew Hambridge (with immense help behind the control panel and on drums from long-time friend Matuzak, whose efforts in helping to create these songs, whether or not they were to ever see the light of day, I will never stop appreciating). After heading south to Nashville from Buffalo to pursue a career in songwriting, the sessions became a bit of a self-contained backlash against the superficiality of the songs I was churning out to fit into the Nashville scene. A homecoming of sorts to the punk and pop influences that I'd left behind. Dealing with all the hardships that come with moving out of your home, your town, your state, your world, for the first time, the words in these songs forced their way out of my head in defiance of everything I'd left my life to accomplish. The music took shape on Randy's old keyboard, an instrument that I had never played before, but the only one that I felt could echo what I was feeling at the time. For what felt like the first time in a long time, I was writing songs for which the purpose and destination were unknown. All I knew was that I had to get them out. Since then, these songs have been sitting on the shelf, getting old and dusty, destination still unknown. When I realized that there was an outlet to share these songs with people directly, I decided it was time to blow the dust off. These songs meant the world to me at the time of their creation, and that meaning has yet to diminish. And as much as I hate the one man with a band name gimmick, in "Just Another Today", a cheerful melody masking a rather depressing self-admittance, I wrote, "It's kicking in that this is what I always do: wait for the future, pass on the present, lie to myself that I'm gonna pull through." And ironically, in many ways, these songs felt like, yes, the pull through. My only hope is that you can feel a little bit of what I felt writing them. I've made them less expensive than most downloadable tracks given that they are still the home recordings of a guy and his friend in the back room of an apartment. So, for those of you who have been waiting over a year to have some of these songs, I'm sorry it took so long. And for those of you who are hearing these for the first time, thank you for finding them a first stop on the road to destination unknown. | |
