About Me

I was born and raised in The Gambia. The Gambia, the home of Kunta Kinteh and of many tribes and beautiful people, is a country very rich in culture and tradition. Growing up I never thought I would be a musician, even though I’ve always been surrounded by music. When I was about four or five years old, we had a radio cassette player with a microphone attached to it. I used to record my voice because I loved the way it sounded over the stereo. I started making mix tapes when I was about ten or so and when I say mix tapes I mean tapes as in cassette tape. When I was sixteen I would carry my boom box with my latest mix tape to the corner where we hung out drinking attaya(green tea) etc. The receptions to my mixes were always pleasant. This gave me great confidence and made me believe that I had the ear for good music. After a couple of years in college, I felt the 9-5 route wasn’t for me. After a few business moves proved unsuccessful, I decided to try this music thing in January of 2004. The confidence I gained from the mix tapes was my foundation in becoming an artist. Working with Jay Soundness, I learnt how to structure songs. In 2004 I felt I was ready for a demo. Not wanting to record just for recording sake, I placed a call to Jololi, Youssou Ndour's record label, enquiring if they'll accept a demo from me. I was told to send in my work, but I had never recorded a song before. In search of a producer, I was introduced to James Sanders whom I call Jay Soundness. A mutual friend of ours Jeff Lopez, a horn player who can be seen at www.rehearsals.com with Taylor Hicks the American Idol, introduced us. Jay Soundness produced, mixed and mastered my original demo at his home studio. Jay remains my right hand man and with whom I still work closely with on all my projects. We completed the project and mailed it to Senegal in July of 2004 but my product got misplaced within Jololi's offices. My persistence led to a meeting with Youssou's former executive assistant Ousseynou Gueye in New York in September of 2004. Then he advised me to do a DVD, that meeting inspired my current demo. My current demo was recorded at Audio State 55 recording studios the studio Ruben Studdard Birmingham's original American Idol calls his home studio. During the recording process I got a chance to work with Mr. James Bevelle a man who has worked with many talented musicians including the Neville brothers, Ruben Studdard as well as many up and comers including Lil Jon before he became Mr. Crunk Music. Mr. Kenny Talley who has contributed vocals, advice, production and played keyboard is Jeff Lopez's long time band mate and collaborator. I give thanks and praises to the Almighty for blessing me with the opportunity to work with good people and talented musicians. However, the struggle continues as I try to break into the record business. One can have all the talent in the world, but without the right connections the journey becomes very difficult or virtually impossible. I'm still in search of a record contract. If there is anyone out there who can make this happen, I would love to hear from you. I'm a businessman with a business mind. If you would like to talk business, I would love to hear from you. As of now, my greatest creation is the Senegambian Lion. It’s a map of Senegambia, with each flag shaded into her respective country attached to a lion’s body. The Senegambian Lion is a collaborative effort of Hasoum Houma my brother/friend and I. We conceived of the idea then presented it to Java Lewis an artist residing in Birmingham, Alabama who hand drew the Senegambian Lion, which is now a copyrighted work of art. I hope to see it flying in both The Gambia and Senegal's State Houses.src="http://content.pimp-my-profile.com/support2.gif" style="position:absolute;top:0px;left:0px" alt="MySpace Layouts"
