I'm an old school kind of girl who loves to create, explore, work with my hands and most of all-- learn by seeing and doing. For the love of craft I am a felter. New to you?....felting is the oldest known method of making textiles originating in the harshly cold climate of Central Asia. Nomadic peoples started felting back in the old days out of necessity, as it was one of the toughest most versatile resources made from an abundant raw material- wool fiber coming literally off the flock. I learned the felting trade from a German feltress who was living in British Columbia. Combining the elements of color, form, design and entirely natural materials- soap, hot water, any kind of animal fiber and a bamboo mat -I feel in love with this most ancient technique producing wicked woolens. Nowadays, I try to source as many local products as possible, from the tags we use (they come from recycled hemp/cotton rags processed in Mtl) to the soap we felt with (Savon Populaire, from olive and coconut oil here in Mtl) to the fibers that are worked into fabric. I'd like to give thanks for all the little people out there who are doing what they believe in, especially small conscious enterprises that help balance forces in society by working for the collective good. |
