Music:Member Since: 10/11/2006Band Website: joejewellguitar.com Band Members: The Joe Jewell Quartet formed in 2004. Included is Fulbright scholar, Dr. Reed Gratz on Fender Rhodes, one of Southern California’s busiest bassists, Baba Elefante and drummer, Mike Bennett, who has been recently featured in both Modern Drummer and Drum! Magazine. Influences: Joe says: "My earliest influences were the Beatles and the early blues/rock guys like Eric Clapton, Mike Bloomfield, and (perhaps my all-time favorite guitarist) Jeff Beck. I loved the original electric bluesmen like BB King and Muddy Waters. Later came the influence of the jazz greats, especially Jim Hall, Wes Montgomery and Kenny Burrell. A more recent influence has been Django and the host of the modern gypsy jazz players. Incredible! I’ve had a long-time love of classical guitar genius Julian Bream. I must also mention my most influential teachers: Joe Diorio, Jim Smith and Edward Flower." Sounds Like: About EVERY NOTE COUNTS The sound is unique, capitalizing on the sonic palette created by the electric fretless bass and masterfully played Fender Rhodes. The drumming and percussion provide a solid but creative underpinning for Joe Jewell’s always melodic guitar. The grooves and the stellar Rhodes playing might remind you of the great CTI recordings of the 1970's. Part of the beauty of this CD comes from the eclectic repertoire, which ranges from straight-ahead jazz to R&B to classical guitar; familiar tunes intermixed with many surprises. This is serious jazz but melodic and listenable at the same time. Brilliantly recorded and mixed, it sounds like you are at an intimate concert!
