| AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF IESHIA KAREEMARiding the number 2 train to 42nd Street in Manhattan I wrote my story.SHOW ME THE WAY LORDWhen I was younger my grandmother told me she was the one to discover my mother Joyce when she died. After a police investigation it was concluded someone had broken into my mother’s apartment and injected her with an acute amount of heroin. My mother died at the age of eighteen from respiratory failure due to someone’s ignorance. Then, after my mother died I lived with my grandmother who used crack. My grandmother would tell me stories of how two of her children were murdered, one of them drowned, and the single living child disowned her. Traumatized by her past my grandmother took many things out on me becoming physically abusive. At the age of seven the Division of Family Services took me away from her, and as the car drove away I looked back confused but I felt it was best that I go.I was then placed into foster care where I was molested, physically abused, and tossed through a total of forty-eight homes. I hid myself often in education to stay focused for success trying not to let my life get to me. At the age of seven-teen I had my own apartment, attended high school, and worked two jobs just to get by. Lamentably, right before my high school graduation I was dropped from the attendance roster and my guidance counselor stated, “Tell your guardian to call me!” In disbelief I stated, “You know I have no legal guardian.” Later I found out I had been dropped from the roster because my address was out of the school district.After that I researched my options and discovered, James H. Groves Diploma at a Distance. After just one year of online classes I graduated and walked with the class of 2000.Next there was college; I was already attending college three weeks before my high school graduation. At this time I was paying my own college tuition, financially supporting myself, and helping my drug addicted grandmother. No matter what the stress, I kept persevering….but that all changed when I got my first tuition bill. Oh yes you guessed it, I could not afford college anymore, so, I got a job trying to build a career as a Media Buyer.As time went on I could not ignore my passion burning inside. That brought me to thinking of a story my aunt once told me. She said my mother took me to New York City when I was a baby because she graciously loved New York. I moved back to New York City three months after I turned twenty-one to seek out what my heart states to the board ways.So, here I sit in New York City on a subway car dreaming for two but focused to help millions. | |
