About Me

I teach guitar at American Band Intstrument Co. on Shelly Drive in Tyler, Texas. I've played guitar since age 11, I started on the music of the Kinks and the Animals in the 1960's and eventually fell in love with the folk guitar sounds of Bob Dylan, Donovan and Paul Simon. Later I discovered the very Engilsh sounds of John Renbourn, the very early (before disco) Bee Gees, Jethro Tull. I was introduced to jazz by my uncle Gaylord Cardino who was a fantastic guitarist, but like so many of the best he hid his playing away and spent most of his time practicing at home. He and my aunt Judy loaned me Charlie Christian, D'jango Reinhart, BillEvans and Jim Hall, King Cole Trio and Jimmy Smith albums... those vynal albums made huge impressions on me. At a Jethro Tull concert in the 1970's I was introduced to the music of "YES"... their guitarist , Steve Howe became a great influence on my attempts to play. Also the CREAM was a gigantic influence... Bassist and Singer, JACK BRUCE, Guitarist ERIC CLAPTON and Drummer Ginger Baker. I must also mention BLOOD SWEAT & TEARS and their fantastic bassist, Jim Fielder (who I happen to have the honor of playing in a jazz trio with at the present). One more mention, my friend, Mike Hendley will always be an influence. Mike is the greatest jazz guitarist I have ever heard. JRY
