| "She's unique beyond words"- Boston Globe " Serpa is a phenomen..."- All About Jazz Sara Serpa blends traditional and contemporary jazz, flowing wordless originals through that most unique instrument, her voice. Sara found her way to music as a precocious 7 year old in her home city Lisboa, Portugal. Lisboa's National Conservatory became her place to embrace Classical Piano and Voice, before Luis Villas Boas Jazz School (Hot Clube de Portugal) welcomed her in 2002. She has been a friend to jazz ever since. In May 2005, a Berklee College of Music Schorlaship brought her to Boston her current home. After one year at Berklee, New England Conservatory eagerly offered a scholarship to pursue a Master in Jazz Performance. While in Boston, Sara Serpa has studied with Dominique Eade, Jerry Bergonzi, Ed Tomassi, Hal Crook, Danilo Perez, John McNeill and Ran Blake among others. For the past three years, Sara Serpa has shared stages with an expanding circle of colleagues including André Matos, Demian Cabaud, Jesse Chandler, Ferenc Nemeth, John Lockwood, Matt Pavolka, Nelson Cascais, Bruno Pedroso, Andre Sousa Machado, Pete Rende, Esperanza Spalding, Nick Falk, Peter Slavov, Aruan Ortiz, Leo Genovese,Albert Sanz, Masa Kamaguchi, RJ Miller, Vardan Ovsepian, Andreia-Pinto Correia. Sara's ethereal voice has graced the spaces of Hot Clube de Portugal, Teatro S Luiz (Lisboa) Regatta Bar, Ryles Jazz Club (Boston), Berklee Performance Center (Boston), Kennedy Center Jazz Club (Washington DC), DaCamera (Houston). Recently Serpa found her way to the Cornelia Street Cafe to cast her enchantment on the ears of New Yorkers. Serpa is now part of the new Greg Osby's Group and is preparing the recording of her cd. |
