About Me |
|
"Fans of Aerosmith and Zeppelin really should check these guys out!" Bruce Dickinson - Iron Maiden "Voodoo Johnson have some great stuff!" Kevin Shirley - Producer (Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden) "Phenomenal, one of the best unsigned albums I've heard" 5/5 Adam Harold - Rocksomething webzine "A great recording that shows Voodoo Johnson to be a cooly confident and talented band with the potential to make a significant stamp on the UK music scene" Black Velvet Magazine "Voodoo Johnson is the real deal!" The Atomic Chaser - All Access Magazine With a sound informed by the classic ‘70s majesty of Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith, combined with the furious energy of more recent acts like Velvet Revolver, Queens of the Stone Age, Monster Magnet, Guns n’ Roses and Pearl Jam, Voodoo Johnson are a force for rock in a nightmare world of Lily Allen and The Ordinary Boys. The award-winning Voodoo Johnson were formed in the West Midlands in 2005, by lead guitarist Carl Gethin and drummer Dave Barker. Initially performing as Polarian, the pair recruited Carl’s brother Paul to play rhythm guitar, and played with a number of local musicians before finally settling on the current line-up of Carl, Dave and Paul, plus Rich Bellamy on bass and singer Kevin Bayliss. You can read more about them all by following the links to their very own myspace pages, just over there to the right....! In their time gigging, the band have enjoyed several memorable nights, including support slots at Wolverhampton’s Civic's with established acts such as the fabulous Duff Mckagan and LOADED! In addition to playing alongside The Zico Chain, Tokyo Dragons, Sign and The Sound Explosion, VJ have rocked sets at The Barfly in Cardiff, The Manchester Academy and Liverpool’s legendary Cavern Club, plus many festivals around the UK including Leeds VW fest, and Wyeside, where they supported the legendary Hawkwind. The band have also had memorable gigs whilst battling with other great acts at various competitions. One of which was KERRANG's MCN finals earlier this year where VJ competed with 7 other finalists from over 500 entrants in the UK. Also, back in 2005, Lead guitarist Carl Gethin’s victory in Total Guitar’s Riffathon competition, for the VJ's cover of 'All Along the Watchtower'. The event, held at London’s Hammersmith Palais, included a meeting with judges Jimmy Page , Brian May and Dan Hawkins , plus prizes of a signed guitar and a stack of other stuff for Carlo. Rock on! Carl Gethin with Brian May , Jimmy Page and and Dan Hawkins With recent radio plays by both Bruce Dickinson and Alex Zane, Voodoo Johnson continue to gig around Birmingham and the West Midlands, as their fan-base and reputation steadily grows. Their combination of classic rock grooves and massive, 21st century amplification ensures their appeal with well-informed modern rock fans and misty-eyed classic-rockers alike, and the four outstanding tracks on their new E.P. mean that 2008 could well be their year... In addition to writing and performing, Voodoo Johnson currently take care of all apsects of band management themselves at a professional level. However, they would welcome any opportunity which would allow them to continue to work solely on creativity. If you feel you can help in any way, please do not hesitate to contact them either through MYSPACE or via the email address shown a the bottom of the site. Music:Member Since: 8/21/2006Band Website: New Site on the way !! Band Members:Click on the Links below for profiles: ULTIMATEGUITAR.COM Fans and the band alike have always revered Iron Maiden’s iconic mascot, Eddie. In fact -- as exposed by a magazine interview a year or two ago -- Maiden’s guitarists confirmed Eddie’s homosexuality, so he is most certainly a developing character. On the other hand, Slash, formerly of Guns N’ Roses, now spearheading Velvet Revolver, is known for his adorning of his famous top hat. Enter Voodoo Johnson, with their mascot, who I can only assume is Voodoo Johnson. By the way, he wears a top hat similar to Slash’s and has a demonic glint in his eye as his frothing mouth drips a viscous crimson liquid. Again, Voodoo Johnson oozes professionalism, albeit a sleazy classic rock professionalism. Kev Bayliss, vocalist and principle lyricist of the band has a voice to rival any on the present-day rock scene, while the twin-engine guitar attack of the Gethins seeps class with every riff and lick. Naturally, Voodoo Johnson lives up to the sleazy image of classic rockers, with their tongues firmly in their cheeks; just look at song titles such as Blow Me (Away), for instance. Down the years, we have all witnessed the many weird and wonderful carnations of Eddie, and Iron Maiden has grown with said Mascot. A looming question is whether or not Voodoo Johnson can achieve similar parallels. Rest assured, the band wouldn’t be featured here if it didn’t at least have the potential. Make sure to listen to The Art Of Losing in your discovery of Voodoo Johnson, who, by the way, played at Kerrang’s live MCN competition on the 19th of April. Despite being situated in the UK, Voodoo Johnson is targeting the USA, and shall be playing in Michigan at the Mount Rock Fest towards the end of July this year. It’s going to be a busy year. ------------------------------------------------------------ ---------- THE NEW EP "II" BLACK VELVET ROCK MAGAZINE A classic rock EP that does the genre justice whilst still able to sound fresh and original, Birmingham five-piece Voodoo Johnson have pieced together a small but perfectly formed four-track release of consistent quality and instantly satisfying rock tracks. Confident and seductively abrasive vocals are matched by equally proficient instrumental efforts, resulting in a set of songs that stand out individually thanks to strong identifiable riffs and contagious lyrics, whilst still maintaining a distinct sound that binds the EP together. A great recording that shows Voodoo Johnson to be a cooly confident and talented band with the potential to make a significant stamp on the UK music scene. 4/5 ------------------------------------------------------------ ---------- FOR MORE REVIEWS CHECK OUT OUR BLOG! ------------------------------------------------------------ ---------- Influences: Led Zeppelin Monster Magnet Audioslave Maylene & The Sons of Disaster Velvet Revolver Tesla Aerosmith Guns 'n' Roses Metallica Black Label Society Pearl Jam The Black Crows Mr. BIG Muse Alice in Chains Matthew Good Band Soundgarden Skin My Chemical Romance Queens of the stone age Down Etc...
